Exactly. I just wish Americans would admit that they love having the power to be able to end someone else's life. Other countries do well without the millions of firearms we have.

So, I actually talked to my Korean cousin about this (sort of) over the weekend, and she says that in Korea, America is known as the most violent country.

Germany is GOTH????? shrug

Japan is looney but has kick ass cartoons. (This is HER talking, not me.)

And Canada is smart.

I'm not surprised by that...but not because I think it's true but because it's all about what the media decides to make it to air...and I can imagine the only real "news" that might make it to korea would be the Virginia tech incident or the sniper incident and stuff like that....never the small local news stories of neighbors helping neighbors and people volunteering...

No. No its not.

Me being serious for a minute, I'm really scared about my kids' future.

She went on to tell me that, in Korea it is EXTRREMELY hard to find a gun, and that her Dad, had a really difficult time finding one just to hunt with.

She was shocked that you can buy guns at Wal Mart here.

She said that shooting in Korea, are really rare and unheard of. She said the MAIN thing there that is going on rite now is suicide.

Um. And I know that most people don't wanna believe or hear this, but when I lived in Saudi Arabia it was the same way. Not violent at all.....well, crime wise. Not like it is here.

It IS scary. We can talk about all the good here all we want and I'm not denying it exists (there's plenty of good here!!), but you do not find the same level of violent crime elsewhere. It's scary and sad. And should be a wake-up call to ourselves to figure out what the hell is going on here.

oh yes that's true and sad, Thankfully, we are free to read what we want, research what we want to find out the truth (I realize many people don't). Where as in many countries already mentioned here..... they are NOT. That there is a BIG difference in us and them that I feel is overlooked. Do not underestimate the higher suicide rates in these countries. Think for a minute what it might be like not to raise your family in anyway you see fit, or choose any career you might want or marry who you wanted or even go out side if you wanted...think for a minute what it would be like to not be able to be your true self, and not because of yourself of or someone in your life but because of your GOVT.!!! THAT to me...is what is scary.
Another thing I think is scary is the, look at us, how terrible we are, attitude...I think that POV is damaging and negative. I'm not saying we should ignore the bad in our country, or that we need to agree with our countries politics AT ALL, but we...as the people of this country are GREAT people as a whole. Yes, there's a lot wrong, but if WE were to ever straighten it out it would have to be as the people UNITED.

A few tidbits that may support you cousin's assessment of America:

In 2001, the National Center for Health Statistics listed homicide as the fourth leading cause of death for children ages 1 through 4, fourth for youth ages 5 through 14, and second for persons ages 15 through 24. (National Center for Health Statistics. Death and Death Rates by Leading Causes of Death and Age: 2001.)

The U.S. has the highest rates of childhood homicide, suicide, and firearm-related death among industrialized countries. (CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, February 7, 1997, Vol 46, No. 5, Rates of Homicide, Suicide, and Firearm-Related Death Among Children in 26 Industrialized Countries.)

The overall firearm-related death rate among U.S. children aged 15 years or less was nearly 12 times higher than among children in the other 25 industrialized countries combined. (CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, February 7, 1997, Vol. 46, No. 5, Rates of Homicide, Suicide, and Firearm-Related Death Among Children in 26 Industrialized Countries)

In 1996, handguns were used to murder 2 people in New Zealand , 15 in Japan , 30 in Great Britain , 106 in Canada , 213 in Germany and 9,390 in the United States . (Legal Community Against Violence, 2000)

Each year an estimated $2.3 billion are spent on medical care for the nation's gunshot victims. Almost half of that sum is paid by U.S. taxpayers. (Legal Community Against Violence, 2000)

Guns in this country cause the death of approximately 12 young people (those 19 years of age and under) each day. The overall firearm-related death rate among children under the age of 15 is nearly 12 times higher than among children in 25 other industrialized countries combined. (Legal Community Against Violence, 2000)
