But at least Trent has no golden era as such, partly because he's only done 6 albums in 20 years, and partly because everything he releases is of a superb quality, whether you like it or not. Well, no not really. It's like when music critics say that a new Prince album is like an older one. Yeah, there are similarities, but what it boils down to are songs. The newer NIN songs are less rememerable than the older ones. You can listen to PHM a couple of times and know every song on it, but I've heard Year Zero several times over now, and can barely tell you the songs on it. It does "feel" like PHM to some extent, but the songs aren't even close. It's like PHM in that it's upbeat and more poppy. That's what I meant. And I disagree whole-heartedly. My friends ALL like Survivalism and Captital G. One of them ran down the street one night, drunk, shouting "I GOT MY VIOLENCE..." - that made me laugh. I'd say his melodies and songs are still just as memorable, it's just a different sound, and you know, feelings change as you grow older. Maybe you interpret YZ in a different way to say, me and Laurel, and that's to do with you as a person, rather than you as a NIN fan. For example, my mum used to love dance music way up until about a year ago, then she just decided it's too much energy as she's got a bit older and likes some really weird electronic ochestra shit...but that's beside the point. With Teeth has forgettable songs, YZ doesn't. I always know, because I can write out the tracklist for YZ from memory and can't for with teeth.....well actually I can, but only because I noticed I couldn't and so made a mental note to remember. Again, I think it still marks a difference between old time fans and new breed fans. There's nothing wrong with that, but I've gotten to a point where I no longer like NIN just because it's Trent Reznor. I more or less listen to it objectively. Sure, I'm going to obtain his material no matter what, and I give him the benefit of the doubt--in other words, I don't resist the new material. But I can't help given that I grew up with the old material to make comparisons. And it just pales in comparison to the older stuff. Nothing on his last 3 albums has the umph of Broken's "Gave Up" or the emotional discharge of "Heresey". Don't get me wrong--it ain't bad by any means. But I just don't get it when people think his new material is on par with the older stuff. resist to don't resist edit [Edited 8/14/07 8:57am]

But I just don't get it when people think his new material is on par with the older stuff. But again, he is aging and getting mellower. I saw that coming. But take me as an example. I got into NIN through the hardest of the hard. Not through Closer as everyone does. I was introduced to NIN, as a DIE-HARD PRINCE FAN, by March of the Pigs. I hated it, but something about the anger clicked. Next thing I knew, I owned the Downward Spiral and couldn't stop listening. 3 months later, need more NIN. Read online about the Fragile being regarded as his best. Bought it. HATED IT. Hated it all...mellow bullshit, not much to it, no anger blah blah blah. 2 weeks later and I can't stop listening to it. Same thing with Pretty Hate Machine, took even longer than the Fragile. Broken I loved the instant I put it on, this was the album I'd been looking for. With Teeth was my album of summer one year, but only because my friends wouldn't stop playing it. On my own I never listen(ed) to it. My least favourite NIN album by a mile. Year Zero took about 3 days. To me it was a "happy" Downward Spiral; all the distortion of TDS but in C major as opposed to A minor, if you know what I mean. So to summarise, I love and feed of the heavy energy, like you, but I think something about our age seperates us..or perhaps what made us fans in the first place. Mine is definitely the fact that I am a depressed little cliché of a teenager and Trent tapped right into my heart and feelings and gave me a vent. No other artist has ever achieved that. I felt the same feelings at your age and that is why I liked NIN. He took the best of Skinny Puppy, Ministry, and Front242 etc. etc. and worked it into a more Joani Mitchell'esque singer-songwriter approach. It was more personal. My issues with the new albums is not that I've grow older and no longer feel the angst, nor that Trent isn't exhibiting the angst--it's the songs themselves. Again, I point to Prince. I'm not expecting him to do Erotic City, Beautiful Ones, or When Doves Cry again. But whatever he does now, I really wish it was on par with those. I like his new music, but I would never say they are the same thing as the older stuff. Same with NIN. And I could point to any number of factors (Prince's place in life, his approach to music, my own maturing), but it ultimately boils down to the songs.
