used car

Thinking about getting a car in the future....if I'm not dead by the time I pass my test....is it really expensive getting a car....the monthly payments? Insurance? or should I stick to the bus and subway. I don't know much about cars.

It would all depend on where you live and all that, I live in santa barbara calif. I could not go without a car. I spend 300.00 on payment, 74 on insurance, and about 40.00 a week on gas.

Basically the more you pay for the actual car, the less you will be spending on maintenance. You can get lucky with old cars sometimes, but considering your username I wouldn't count on it. wink

In general, having a car means amazing freedom. I think it's definitely worth it as long as you can afford it.

BUT ( and that is a big but, no pun intented), after making ALL the payments and paying the car off that you got brand new ( at the time you got it AND 5 years down the road), that is when EVERYTHING goes to crap(like in the one commercial)! The payments you just get done paying DOUBLES when certain things goes out like the catylatic convertor($300-800 est.), the main computer($800-$1000 est for certain cars), the list goes on. I kept mine up on maintenence and the up keep of it(and still do) and Im still having problems with it after paying off the darn car after a 2-3 year period.

Yes, the freedom is amazing BUT one still needs a back up plan when the car goes on the frits!

Cars are unpredictable!

You can look into a KIA from their website

www.kia.com ( I think that is it)

They have low monthly payments but I dont know about the insurance on them. They might have one in your area. My sister has one and they are nice for a first time car.

Yeah, but that's if you get a brand new car like you said. If you're looking into, say, a car from '98 and one from '86 then you get a lot more stability for the money with the former since it's past all the initial glitches but still not so old that it's falling apart completely. On the other hand it will cost quite a bit more than the older car.

I guess unlucky should let us know roughly what her budget is so that we know if we should be talking glitz or if we should be talking old junk versus even older junk, like I am. smile

If you're depending on it for work for example, then yes. nod

I got mine back in 2000(its a 1999) was a 1 owner and the lady barely drove it around( had 25,000 original miles on it when I got it). I have 75,000 miles on it today( original miles). I payed it off 2-3 years ago, still doing the upkeep on it. And it still acts up. The qoute I gave in my initial post was for my car. Still even, NOONE knows when the catylatic convertor will go out on a car.

Freedom has NOTHING to do with work, its always good to have a back up plan with a car new or used!I have seen people have their cars/trucks/SUV's for 1 week and problems show up after being drove off the lot, working fine one minute, the next its in the shop.

Not a problem! I have been looking into one myself. But not sure if I want another car payment or not.

I think you're getting my quotes a bit mixed up. I basically just agreed that it's important to have a back-up plan if you're relying on the car for work. If you're mostly just using it for your spare time and road trips and such, then it's not the end of the world if you experience some problems with it. It still sucks, but hey, it sucks when an iPod breaks down too and that doesn't mean I keep a spare one in my pocket just in case. For the most part, I'd say that cars run okay. Especially if you've invested in a Toyota or some other eternal machine. The occasional glitch is unavoidable but acceptable, considering the benefits you get from having a car. shrug
