You really wanna know ...ok here goes ... black cows eat more grass than brown ones and tan ones drink more water than black ones. If we'd put them together, we'd risk the brown ones to starve to death and the black ones to dehydrate. Since the tan ones are only used for their meat, and we all love cream, this is the ideal solution.

Cos if you mix em all up and they interbreed... ... all the colours would alter... ... and they woulld just be left with Gray cows... ...Which don't look as pretty in the fields
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
the final and only correct answer is ... they are different breeds ... some cows are only used for milk, others for milk and meat, and some for meat only. It's only logical that a farmer chooses one of three goals and breeds his cows for that purpose and that's why you won't see different breeds grazing together.
Still you gotta come to europe i've got references but they're in Dutch only ... I'll translate them while having a beer on a terrace in the beautiful town of Bruges

Steadwood said: purplekisses said: then why don't they do that to horses Cos horses are fade resistant Are not, at least not the white ones. Unless they're albino they start out as black and then fade off more and more towards white with every year.

L4OA is right though, it's not very common to have more than one breed unless you have both beef and dairy cattle. Beef cattle would totally ruin the dairy ones and vice versa.

ok woman if you want me to go all "country girl" on you i will
there are some characteristics within different breeds that different producers find desireable. ease of calving, high birthweight calves, good mothering, ease of handling, nice marbling of meat or it could be as simple as they prefer one breed because they like the way they look. there are others that try to get the best of both breeds by using one breed for a sire in a herd full of another breed. hybrid vigor, if you will. even still, the resulting generation of calves will generally all look similar as they have been bred by the same bull. you could use a multi-breed bull with multi-breed cows but then you tend to loose the favorable characteristics that you liked in that breed in the first place. you end up with some small calves and some big, some gentle cows and some really nasty ones, some good mothers and some not. you get the idea :cowgirl:
