Americas favorite sport is NOT baseball, but football, which is 80% black players. ALL of the top RB's of the past are black, and they are held in the highest esteem. Get the fuck out of here with that lame ass racial argument.
SEE THRU IT and figure out that it's the 'roids that people HATE about BB.

Do they not call baseball "America's Favorite Pastime"?... They do. Here's another silly muthafucker who doesn't read all of the post. Only picks out what he wants to see. Who in the fuck, besides u, is talking about football? Please don't try to school me about the racial breakdown in football. I'm already knowing all of this. But Jim Brown, O.J., Gayle, Walter, etc., don't have shit to do with the comment I made about two black men own the record in baseball. And that a lot of folks have a problem with that. This very thing has been discussed as of late on sport shows such as Jim Rome and Stephen A. Smith. I was never talking about "why" SOME folks hate Bonds. I never even brought up steroids. If it was Cecil and not Bonds, my comment would STILL stand. Replace Bonds with any other brother and it would still be a hard pill to swallow for some folks. THAT was what my post was about. Not folks loving black players like Michael Jordan and shit.

So if Mark McGwire was on the verge of breaking Hank Aaron's record, with all the same steroid accusations, would there be as much controversy? If so then it's about steroids. If not, then it's about race.

The players took the steroids and no one(but possibly the threat of other players doing the same thing) made them do it.

..and the Lords of Baseball knew what was happening yet they did nothing - they're just as bad as the players. This sh!t's been going on since the late 80's. Folks villify Jose Canseco, but turns out he was right. Supposedly he has the goods on A-Rod in his upcoming book.

I'm amused by all the hypocrisy. You have loudmouths like Curt Schilling trashing Bonds, yet he says nothing about the juicers he played with in Arizona. Here in NYC, Yankee fans gave the cheater Jason Giambi standing ovations, but Bonds is the devil. Bunch of f-n yahoos - I can't take any of them seriously.

Bonds gets standing ovations in SF all the time (and in Oakland too, all three times a year they play there)....and Giambi gets bood everywhere except for NY.

Barry Bonds is NOT the greatest player in modern history. GREAT hitter, no doubt, but not greatest player, not even close.

He did win 8 gold gloves....so for the majority of his career he was way above average defensively. Not to mention he has over 500 stolen bases.....that is way more that just hitting!

I'm happy for Bonds. I hope he breaks Hank's record. The next game he plays. I've been watching Bonds his whole career. He's always been a great homerun hitter. Always. I KNOW it's a VERY tough pill to swallow for many baseball fans that your two top homerun hitters in America's favorite pastime sport are black men, but uh....oh well.

Dude, you're usually more rational than this...it's not about race, but about the steroids. Hank will always have this record in my eyes, not BB.

In this case I truly believe it is mostly about steroids. Sure there are always going to be haters and racists. But look back to when Barry was breaking the single season Home run record. He was getting standing ovations everywhere, EVERYWHERE! And he was breaking a white mans record who had just broke another white mans record....and yet Barry was still getting love and respect at every stadium, every game.

Fast forward to 2007...now he gets booed at every stadium except at home. What changed???

Did America all of the sudden realize he is black...NO. The difference between 2001 when he was being cheered and revered and today where he is being booed and criticized is the Jose Canseco book, the other book (Game of Shadows) and BALCO scandal in which Barry Bonds is right in the middle of.

The perception, right or wrong is that he cheated. That is why he is hated so much now. And if you think that it would not have affected Mark McGuire if he were playing today and breaking records...then why isn't he in the hall of fame? Because of the whole steroid blow up that caught him up in it too. Now McGuire is seen as a cheater also and he is paying for it...no hall of fame.

People kind of suspected back in 1998 when McGuire and Sosa where breaking records and in 2001 when Barry did it...but it was easy to look the other way without the books and Balco scandal.

Now they are seen as cheaters, and in general cheaters are not well liked in pro sports, period.

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

You are being entirely too rational for this thread apparently. biggrin

I hope this isn't going to be what it's like for the 5 years it will take for A-Rod to steamroll over Bonds' record. Something tells me also - it will be a much happier occasion for the sport of baseball...

Thanks...yeah I noticed I really didn't get any responses to this post (until yours) lol .

I'm not so sure you can blame race or even steroids for peoples' hatred of Bonds. I think it's partly because Bonds comes across like an ass at every turn.

he has a blatent dislike of the media and i don't blame him. they tend 2 twist everything 2 sell papers or increase ratings.

btw ..bud selig is a asshole thumbs up!

That's true, I can't imagine loving the media if I was him, but he just doesn't really come across as likeable in any way. Sometimes I wonder if that's actually more respectable, compared to guys like Shaq who try to be great "entertainers." lol

He does his job*, and doesn't have to be liked.

Dude, you're usually more rational than this...it's not about race, but about the steroids. Hank will always have this record in my eyes, not BB.

"America's Favorite Pastime" is no longer valid...check out any TV ratings or season ticket sales...Football has it all over baseball...

Your mind seems to be stuck in the '70's...when Hank Aaron really was hated on for being black. Fast forward to the 2000's, in this era of political correctness, when any white man can get fired for saying anything derogatory about blacks...that's where we live now. It's about steroids use. Barry is a cheater, has been for a long time, and has gotten away with it. Sound a little like OJ???? THAT'S why folks are hatin'.

It's black folk that think like you that keep racisim at the forefront...WHY???
You can't remain the victim forever.
Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

I am all for innocent until proven guilty, I am a huge Oakland A's and SF Giants fan (have been all my life) and I have enjoyed watching Barry Bonds play up close since 1993 and I truly wish there was some kind of fool proof test to prove he did not use steroids, growth hormones or any other performance enhancing drugs. I have defended Barry for years but at some point, even I had to say wait a minute, something ain't right here.

For his head and feet to actually grow bigger in his mid 30's is not NATURAL, that just does not happen. He shaved his head and had to get a bigger hat for Pete's sake! There is just too much circumstantial evidence. If this were a criminal case in court, he would be convicted by the circumstantial evidence alone.

Barry Bonds is NOT the greatest player in modern history. GREAT hitter, no doubt, but not greatest player, not even close.

This is so true, he sucks in the outfield.

I played softball, same position, for six years. My coach would have beat my ass if I fielded as Mr. Bonds has been known to.

Now he is definitely a defensive liability in the Outfield, but in his prime (before his legs were shot) he won 8 gold gloves...not bad at all!
