Harry Potter and the Order of The Pheonix - I finally saw the movie. Most of my friends are Harry Potter fans, and they didn't not care for this movie.
Maybe it's because I"m not as smart as they are, or maybe it's because, I'm a fair-weather fan jumping on the bandwagon late in the game, but I loved the movie. I thought it was almost as good as the first one. The difference between this one and the other 4 movies before it, is that this time around, the magic is no longer all that much fun, except in a few very short scenes. This time, the spells and powers are used very deliberately and there is always a sense of foreboding, like these poor kids are readying themselves for something awful, whereas in the previous movies, there was some sense too, but to a much lesser extent. Also, the character development here is much more focused on Potter himself, and the supporting characters barely get any whatsoever. Which is fine to me, since there were alot of pscyho-drama going in this poor kid and you don't really want to end up with a jumbled mess ala Pirates of the Carrabian . I felt the movie to be rather heart-breaking in most parts. I kept getting the sense that he's being washed and cleaned for some big sacrificial ceremony, and the sense of longing and isolation torturing him was so evident that it almost disappointed me that Harry had to verbalize it in the dialogged as it didn't even need to be stated. If only Mel Gibson could've pulled that off with his own Christ figures in his films. Overall, I thought the film was good. Not awesome, but definitely almost as good as the first. Yes, some of the charm and "magic' is gone, but you finally get a sense that you're no longer watching an episode of an ongoing sitcom, but rather you've opened the middle chapter to a saga that ultimately must come to some resolution. I think I'll read book 6 and 7 now and complete my Harry Potter Poser fandom. grammar edit [Edited 8/4/07 16:23pm]

i liked about half of it. they could've cut out some things. like that dumb love interest story line, which lead to nothing and revealed just as much. and her acting was poor. i appreciate that they made it a bit more mature, if you will. i think the magic is one of the main factors that makes Harry Potter what it is. after the movie, you could hear the same feeling echoing through out the audience.

There, I said it. And I LOVED the movie. I guess I can understand some complaints, but overall I think they did a magnificent job with what they had. They cut all the right things and kept the story moving as it should. |

I BECAME an avid fan by reading the books. You might too. There is a LOT left out of the movies. Try making a 800 page book into a 2 hour movie. It's not possible to leave everything in. I think they've done an awesome job of getting the right things in for the most part and there are plenty of things I'm glad they left out. But there are so many fun back stories and nuances that simply add to the whole, well, "lore" I guess. Read them. Just do it. |

Does she develope the supporting characters in the book "The order of the Phoenix?" I'd love to know how Ron and Mynie(sp?) get along. It seems to me that they will either end up being super close friends, or love interests.

As I said, lots of back stories. I think all of the characters are so much more flushed out in all of the books. But not to an annoying degree. I think the only thing that got tiresome to me in all the books is the frequency of quidditch in the first 4 or so. Other than that, nothing seems superfluous or unnecessary to me. It's all good stuff. |
