I may be out of place saying this but, I don't care. Those people are just wrong. Why on god's green earth would you do this? I have 4 kids and I always feel guilty that I am not spending enough one on one time with each child. I can not even imagine how those kids must feel having to be one of 17! I've seen that family on television, the mother just likes the idea of being pregnant. She thrives on the attention of it all. That is not a family, it is a freak show.

What ends up happening is that the older ones end up being "parents" literally. Of course they aren't the biological parents, but they do all of the parental tasks...They take care of the younger ones. They feed, dress, bathe, teach, entertain. I mean, come on...I consider myself a Christian and I don't buy into this BS that you have to have as many kids as God gives you. I think God gave us a complex brain for thinking and making decisions. Just because you can have that many doesn't necessarily mean it's a good idea. If God wanted us to be like animals, particularly dogs and cats cause they can have huge litters, we'd be small, furry, and lick our private parts!

Ugh, I agree. Irresponsible parenting.

I have seen the show...the kids are on a "buddy system" each older kid has another younger kid to be in charge of. Just wrong wrong wrong.

YES! I saw that too. I think you should only have as many kids as you yourself can care for. To depend on your older children to raise your younger ones so you can go get pregnant again is a little screwed up. IMO

nod It is. Kids living in this environment where they have to tend to an older kid, are forced to grow up way too fast. Let the kids be kids, they grow up fast enough as it is. They should be able to enjoy their childhood, and to not be tied down 24/7 because they're in charge of a sibling.

I lived in Delaware for a bit and two of my neighbors had 8 and 9 kids. I felt sorry for the older ones because they were always either cleaning or babysitting!
lol

On the flip side, I have a friend who is one of eleven kids and he grew up on a farm close to his grandparents. He and his siblings really get along and genuinely love each other and help each other out. They have an awesome family.

Yeah these kids will have a great life growing up - no chance of going to college and whatever money they make on their minimum wage job they'll have to send hom cos there'll always be more mouths to feed. Fucked UP.

falloff Can you imagine the stretch marks she must have from being pregnant so many times? disbelief

either she no longer gets stretch marks or her stretch marks have stretch marks. confused

then there's this eek

.The greatest officially recorded number of children born to one mother is 69, to the wife of Feodor Vassilyev, a peasant from Shuya, Russia. In a total of 27 confinements between 1725 and 1765, she gave birth to 16 pairs of twins, seven sets of quadruplets (the greatest number of multiple births in one family). Only two of the children failed to survive their infancy. The world's most prolific living mother is believed to be Leontina Albina from San Antonio, Chile, who reproduced her 55th and last child in 1981. Her husband stated that they were married in Argentina in 1943 and had five sets of triplets (all boys) before moving to Chile.

Well, I don't think they really care because they are taught to believe in a VERY conservative upbringing. The girls are brought up to believe their whole purpose in life is to give birth and the guys think the same. Some of the kids from this family said they'd want lots of kids themselves, but a fair number said, "no way!" I agree that it's messed up.

Yeah, bible-bashers... I read that they're all home schooled (no really? rolleyes ) and that the main "text book" is the bible. Don't the states have regulation for home-schooling, don't you have to follow the curriculum? Assholes.

i said AMERICA, in general..not the ORG. truth is, more than likely, these folks wouldn't be on discovery channel and be in usa today if they were a minority couple--they'd be a rallying cry for immigration laws or family values. everything isn't about skin color, but some observations can be made about perception. you don't have to like what i said as opinion, and personally i could give a rat's ass those people or your "some people" remark.

I've always thought there was some kind of medical risk to have kids so close together like that. Doesn't the female body need to rest and recover from the trauma of childbirth?

Only if you can't take care of them. Those two are VERY organized and those kids are well taken care of and looked after and surprisingly well behaved. And I don't know what ol' Jim Bob does for a living but whatever it is, it ain't no joke because they just built a HUGE for the big family and their food bill is off the charts. lol
