the book was FAR better. there were very important themes which were left out of the movie, which to me completely re-define the point of the whole book. i've read this book more times than any other book, and i'm sure i'll read it a few more times before i kick off.

nod Valid point. Essentially, the soundtrack carried the film.

I've always wanted to read The Body to see if it's as good as Stand By Me.

I liked the film version of Breakfast at Tiffany's more than the novella (except for Mickey Rourke as Mr. Yunioshi :cringe:) and Great Expectations, too--but I really hate Dickens. shrug

Ooh, and maybe Spike Lee's Malcom X, although Haley's biography is good too.

(While I don't feel this way, I could see some people preferring Bram Stoker's Dracula film--the one w/Winona Ryder & Keanu Reeves--more than the book?)

Are you mad? The soundtrack was great, but the performances were spot on. A little melodramatic at times, but that film is mesmerizing from the opening scenes. In my opinion it's one of Spielberg's best films, and easily my favorite.

No, Reeves and Ryder suck ass in that film. Even Anthony Hopkins doesn't seem to take it seriously. The book had a sense of urgency that the film lacked, I think.

I can see that. The Tom Bombadil stuff wasn't missed by me.

And, I also thought the Narnia film was at least as good as the book. I hope "Caspian" is as good.

I thought "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe" was almost as good as the book, but no where near as good as A Horse and His boy and some of the other stories.

They could have found better children actors though.

What do you mean? Some crappy BBC version of "A Horse"? Or do you mean you like that book more than the "Wardrobe" book? My personal favorite of the books is "Magician's Nephew," which I think they should have made first.

I thought the kids in the film were great, especially Lucy. Her first scene with Tumnus was perfect. And the battle with the White Witch and all that was great.

yeah but in all these instances the films are so famous and so ingrained
in our minds that it's almost impossible to read the book without having
the images from the movie overlapping what you read.

it's almost as if the movie in some way becomes the original eventhough
the book really is.

altho, i guess that is just what this thread is about isn't it. and i do
agree very strongly with Breakfast at Tiffany's, which is incidentally a
rather long short story lol, because i like both the book and the film,
but i never have my own images for the book the only things i see when i
think about it are the film images.

Yes, I meant, the book "A Horse and His Boy" was better than The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. Though I enjoyed "The Magician's Nephew" more too.

I think the Magician's Nephew could easily be done as a prequel since it doesn't have any of the same human actors in it, right? Either way, I would LOVE to see Tim Burton give a crack at that movie.

I'm not going to say that the film is better than the book, but the Lord of the Rings movies are far far far better paced than the book. The book was a tedious read for me. I mean, he goes on for page after page after page with one storyline to the point where I just gave up once.

and the books are masterpieces.

I agree, I hated the film, it didn't have the magic deep feeling of the book or the 70's cartoon

oh, that was my favorite part! learning the language as you went along. If you try to pick it up and read it in the middle you'll have no clue, but you're kind of eased into it from the beginning.

I never thought of that, but that would be great. The kooky professor, the Woods Between the Worlds, and that weird world they free Jadis from. That'd be a cool Burton film.

I agree, I love the film too. With the exception that really horrible narration throughout. Especially the narration that is just describing what was happening on screen, such as "The wolf's eye glowed red," or "His helmet was hot, so he took it off. But everything else about the film was great. Especially the sexy (from the neck down) Xerxes and Lionidas. drool
