How overwieght do you have to be to do it? If you don't mind me asking how much did your friend weigh before the surgery? I asked my Doctor about ayear ago and he said it wasn't an option for me, but lately I've been thinking of trying a different doctor. My friend weighed about 285...she is 5'4"...I believe you have to be at least 100lbs over the normal weight for your height... First off, who's she kidding? I mean, who didn't know that's what she did?
Second, for those of you saying you wish you were a candidate - if you have the $ for gastric bypass, do you have the $ to get all that excess skin removed as well? That's something to really think about b/c most people seem to end up that way & it's something they don't talk about enough w/ that surgery. Bottom line - to STAY slimmer (b/c mf's do gain again eventually) you'd have to adopt a lifestyle change ANYWAY: regular exercise & healthier eating. I know it's easier said, I know it's a long & shitty road but it's so much better for your body to do it naturally with diet & exercise. In the end you'll have muscle tone, no hanging flab & some $ in your account

The problem with morbid obesity is, it results in other health problems: chronic back pain, joint pain, shortness of breath, sleep apnea, diabetes etc,
Whatever will help people lose weight and get a healthier life, I'm all for. Surgery, banding, diet pills. Anything is OK, as long as it's legal and safe.

CalhounSq said: CarrieMpls said: Yeah, that doesn't always work. What doesn't? A gamut of circumstances affect the ability of morbidly obese to change. Motivation, mobility, and being at the point of needing a physicians care to exercise as it's dangerous. It's with those who are in the 100# overweight description. There's cardiac issues. I'm no expert, but with gastric bypass surgery there's screening done and physical and psychological evaluations. At least with those I've spoken with, who have had this done in my community. I ran 8 miles today and lifted weights at the gym. (was out of town and hadn't exercised) I see the same addictions with exercise that I see with food. There are fanatics who run 60mile weeks. That's not healthy, either.

That's not healthy, either. All true, & I need to remember that. Having 2 morbidly obese youngsters in my family (where all but 2 of us have a weight problem) I'm basing it on what I see in my own backyard, which is an unwillingness to be absolutely honest about what HAS TO be done to lose weight. For a lot of people it's not some helpless genetic situation - all it took was a bad diet & large portions to gain & keep that kind of weight. & when you can't take a good honest look @ your habits & admit those things there's gonna be a lot of denial that prevents you from losing weight. I'm not saying it's easy, I imagine it's one of the hardest things one can do but you gotta be honest about it. Absolutely change what you eat, how much, how often & workout like fucking crazy (start slow, build up endurance & push it as far as you can). I know life gets in the way but I honestly think the surgery is seen as a quick fix to a problem that took years to manifest - people are more capable than they think, it can be done...

omg, my everlasting org crush, through all the fickle affections, the one whom I wish to be next to in hope without creeping out to a terrifying degree, the one who unlike Helen of Troy wouldn't merely launch a thousand ships by her incredible beauty but instead would get them to do something useful, like bring back some chips, the one of org legend, whose smiles could light up a hundred empty rooms let alone Prince's mere one, who I would stalk, and not just in a half-hearted non-threatening org-wise kinda way but in the 'at your bedroom window hanging from a tree branch' kind of way that only true adoration can manifest... ...
