I'm not overtly bothered if I discover people are discussing me behind my back, so long as it's accurate and justified. If I do something wrong or crazy (either inadvertently or forcibly) I'd expect people to have an opinion. It's silly to think that mutual friends would never discuss you whilst you're out of earshot.

The only time I have a problem is when people exaggerate or tell blatant lies - especially if the people telling tales don't even know me.
