Students break Teachers neck http://abclocal.go.com/wp...id=5062501
GERMANTOWN - February 23, 2007 - Two students accused of attacking a teacher in a hallway of Germantown High School on Friday morning are now behind bars. The attack happened after 60-year-old Frank Burd confiscated an iPod from one of the students who was using it in class. The 14-year-old returned later with an 11th grader. The teens allegedly pushed Burd, who struck his head on a locker. Schools CEO Paul Vallas said Burd broke his neck in two places. He was taken to Einstein Medical Center, but showed no sign of paralysis. The confrontation was caught on videotape. School officials were able to use the tape to immediately identify the students. 17-year-old Donte Boykin was taken to Northwest Detectives in handcuffs on Friday evening, shortly after arresting the 14-year-old. Both students have a checkered past. They were both previously expelled, but they were allowed to return to school after a year. School officials say the kids were in the process of being expelled again when they assaulted Burd. They are behind bars in the process of being slapped with serious charges. They will be charged as adults. Burd, a popular math and photography teacher, is recovering in intensive care at Einstein Medical Center. He remains in critical but stable condition. He is expected to have surgery on Monday.

Assuming the kid got the iPod through legitimate means, who the heck would buy such a pricy toy for an asshole like that?
I also hope that the news outlet reporting this is pretty confident this is an open-and-shut case. Naming a minor, even a 17-year-old one, in a pending legal case is really bad form. If he gets off, they stand to be sued. [Edited 7/17/07 17:49pm] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

[Edited 7/17/07 17:49pm] i'm guessing he's being tried as an adult which may have an affect on how the media treats him. also, the kid was on camera so it's probably open and shut, lol.

It seems they both are being tried as adults. But the younger kid isn't named. Seems perhaps sloppily arbitrary. Perhaps being named in and of itself is not grounds for a lawsuit, though, as most policies against it are newsroom decisions rather than state laws, I think. Yet I hope the 17-year-old is, indeed, found guilty, because I can see a hungry lawyer going after the news outlet on some BS like this. also, the kid was on camera so it's probably open and shut, lol.

ever seen the MTV Sweet 16 show? The hardest thing to give a child is a respest for life. The easiest thing to give a child is that thing and this thing, which is ok, if they're deserving. With maturity comes responsibility. We tend to spoil our children by fulfilling their every desire. It starts at a very early age and progresses as they become teens. By then we've created monsters, but it is the fault of the parents who took the easy route. Consistent communication with your child is vital in getting them to be responsible for themselves. Talk, talk, talk, talk, talk TO them and not just AT them. "How was school today" is how I get my teens to talk. Inside of Me, I am Free, Free to be Me.

Agreed. It's wrong for 60 year old that should've retired (and enjoyed his years out of the perfession)to have to be subjected to nonesense from thugs in an Inner City Classroom .

I've always said teachers in inner-city schools(the ones who actually care) deserve combat pay. There's so much B.S. you have to deal with. Sometimes the parents are worse than the damn kids.
