That is so true. I would take the Metro Link to Work if I could but the city I work in has no train depot. Plus I work in the ghetto, so if I rode the bus to work out there I would have to fear for my life everyday.

Never would I take the bus where I live cause I really live in the ghetto, I am very fortunte that I have never had to take it

veronikka, once I rode the public transportation and I saw a dude that looked so much like Johnny Depp except he had this weird long mustache. Anyway, the man carried what looked like art portofolios and when he got off the transportation I quickly put my face on the window as it started and he looked at me like this hmm from the corner he was dropped off and I was like this shocked
I really like spicy food. I mostly put Jalapenos on a lot of my food.

gurrl! I almost choked!! lol! I did look at the guy twice. However, for some reason people don't hold a lot of eye contact with me. It must be intimidating or something.

Good compared to most of the US, but shit for a major city. We have a decent bus system in Seattle/King County, and a limited commuter rail thing that runs to the suburbs south of the city. But we really need a monorail/'L' network.

London. The tubes are terrible. Always down, delayed, derailed or being bombed.

I always have the intention of using it more, but there always seems a drawback. Such as using the trolley for all downtown trips, for concerts, 2nd job work, just to hang out, etc.; problem is the time I want to return home, the trolley has stopped running and it's scary waiting for the few buses that might still be running. This city has changed so drastically. For my everyday trips like picking up household necessities, trying to get to the places I would normally frequent seems like a confusing tangled path trying to master a route to get there, not to even mention that the places I frequent are no where near each other makes it kind of impossible on time. I guess I could try taking it to one place a week. But for those unique outings like certain museums, parks, and special street events it's rather more convenient than driving.

Which begs the question, I hear more often then not that public tranportation sucks, what would it take to make it better, and what would it take to get you to ride it.

It's not that bad...try taking public transportation from Long Beach to downtown LA and then an LA city bus. That shit's bad. disbelief

The things I didn't like about the trains (CTA) when I lived there were:

    1. not that many people take the train after 10pm, so as a female there were times I wanted to take it, but didn't feel it was safe.
    2. it doesn't run frequently enough (buses too)

I think they should build a train line that forms a "C" shape and connects all the lines together. The way it is now, to get from Belmont (red line) to Milwaukee/North/Damen (blue line) you either have to take the red line all the way downtown and then back out to Milwaukee/North/Damen, or take a bus part way. I don't see that happening anytime soon, though.

The best thing about Chicago mass transit is that you can take it to both airports. I wish they had that in New York! Instead I always have to spend at least $40 on cabs ($20+ each way to/from LaGuardia) each time I fly. confused

But overall, New York's public transportation is pretty good as far as I'm concerned. The subway's get a little jacked up on the weekends when they're doing construction, but you just learn to check the service advisories. And they desperately need another line on the east side of Manhattan (which they're working on but it will take years to complete).

I actually take the bus to work. I prefer the bus because it's less smelly, you can look out the windows, and it drops me off closer to work (b/c of where I live & where I work, taking the subway wouldn't really be any faster). If I'm going farther or don't have as much time I'll take the subway, but otherwise I like the bus. shrug

Then I walk home from work most nights. It takes about 45 minutes, which is only 10 minutes longer than my morning commute, and it's just over a mile.

Some lines are better than others. I take the No. 36 bus to Parkchester(Bronx), and catch the 6 Express. Nothing but delays, even when I switch to the 4/5 Express at 125th street.
