I crossed several countries in Europe on a night train once
it was a bit boring the 6 people I shared the compartment with were OK, but my feather pillow burst in the night and when I woke up I thought someone had killed a chicken in my bed.

Ex-Moderator | When I was 19 I took a train from Minneapolis to New Orleans by myself to meet my friend who was studying at Tulane. I was actually on the train called "The City of New Orleans" on the Chicago to New Orleans leg. It took FOREVER to get there. But I actually had an OK time. It wasn't too full so I was able to sleep when I wanted and I met a nice pair of Australians that were traveling around the US and we shared stories for hours. We also met a girl from Louisiana who pointed out all the trees and scenery to us and such along the way. It was neat. I don't think I'd do it again, as I much prefer to fly and it can get uncomfortable if you're going far. But it's a nice way to see the country, and you often get views you wouldn't if traveling my car.
I took trains from Paris to Nice to Milan to Florence to Rome and then a night train all the way up to Amsterdam on my first european trip. All good experiences there as well. |

Ex-Moderator | PS - There's just something romantic about trains, though. At least the european ones. Maybe not to those who have the opportunity to ride them all the time, I don't know. But I remember a particularly tearful goodbye with someone who sat outside the train, outside my window waiting till my train left. I will never, ever forget that. And seeing the different train stations through europe was such a kick for me. Many of them are quite gorgeous, under the dirt and grime. |

I went to California from Kentucky in 94 and 95. We caught the train at a small stop and went up to Chicago. I love that station, so much hustle and bustle it was exciting. We bought seats for me and my daughter and in 95 my youngest was an infant. It is a long trip but you get to see the beauty of the country. You can go to the meal car and play games watch movies etc... I want to do that trip again ( the train that is) but I never have enough time to travel at my leisure. We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color. Maya Angelou

We travelled by train the majority of the time in Germany, Austria and France.
I absolutely loved it. It beats the shit out of flying for short or moderate distances.

But if it's less than 5 or 6 hours, it's pointless to go to an airport, process through, and fly with that terrible plane service. We went by train first class and it was great. Germany and Austria are beautiful by train.
