Not to diss Romania, but although I've heard the countryside is beautiful, the country is not exactly teeming with tourist appeal. This seems a plum opportunity to more permanently seize this as a nationally owned historic site. They could contract out for management. Anyone know if Romania is broke? (Seems like something 9s would know.)
I'm also suprised it isn't a UNESCO World Heritage Site. [Edited 7/3/07 14:51pm] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Define "broke". As far as I know there are only two countries in the entire world that don't have an enormous national debt... This seems a plum opportunity to more permanently seize this as a nationally owned historic site. They could contract out for management.
Agreed. I was planning a road trip to (amongst other countries) Romania for this summer and the only things I could think of that I'd wanted to see was exactly what you mentioned; the countryside and the castle. They should really try to make the most of it, without ruining it with Dracula The Thrill Ride or something.

Although the country could capitalize in a halfway intelligent way: I'm thinking Bran Castle as Romania's premier World Heritage Site (with a nomination to have it formally named by UNESCO) and an adjacent world-class museum/library serving as home to the "International Society of Horror/Gothic/Dark Romance Literature" or some such crap. They could house rare, acquired manuscripts; first prints; celluloids; personal effects of authors; etc. They could serve as a sort of cultural repository of old Pan-European folklore, superstition, etc. (The infamous Scholomance was long believed to be in the region as well! ...And if they've got lots of bats, all the better!) They could host international conferences for academics and literati types. Maybe even throw the occassional gratuitous Halloween bash, etc. They'd have to keep it from getting too dark for the local Catholic population ...and they'd have to control for the droves of wierdos and black-clad goth kids who'd steal away there, no doubt. But it'd be good for the national economy, maybe, and it might win some visibility and respect for related literary genres. OK, let me stop. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Kind of like a "genuine theme park" where all the attractions are real, and anchored in regional history. With proper presentation that makes it accessible and vivid without being speculative and commercialized, it would be great. I'd definitely go and see it.

I've been to the torture museum in Rothenburg, Germany and it was one of the best museums I've ever been to and a great lesson on midieval history: http://www.kriminalmuseum...page1.html Sort of like going to the Alcatraz Prison too. Oh man, when I was a kid in school, I drew a picture of Reagan (Linda Blair) with her scarred face, disheveled hair and chapped lips - and then made photocopies at my mother's work. I can only imagine what people thought of me back then.
