Classic Film&Very Much on a Street Level.I think that Between the Gangster Films of the time&the Cool Black Films of the time alot of those Elements Inspired "TaxiDriver" IMHO.I have the DVD with the extra features&it's quite powerful.Jodie Foster was something else in it as was Harvey Keitel.Cybil Shephard was Stunning with Her Appeal IMHO.Robert De Niro gives one of His Greatest Performances Ever.what still to this day Blows Me away is how John Hinckley was so Inspired too go after Ronald Reagan after seeing this Film??De Niro's Mohawk was Cool&Cold all at once.I love the Music with this Film as well.I ahve the SOundtrack.the Language was Very Street.

I relaly like Raging Bull too, but I prefer Taxi Driver.

Taxi Driver is just like Eyes Wide Shut. They are both movies that are about how men percieve the world. You'll note that the world revolves around violence, sex, supposed heroism, etc. They are told from the viewpoint of a man, and expose the ways that men look at the world, be it through delousoins of grandeur, or frightening reality.

I'm sure I can go into more detail but if you look at those movies with that in mind, you might see a different movie than before. It may also help understand why Scorcese himself wanted to play the part of the enraged/sexualy aroused/pitfuly limp dicked man. A woman was making him feel smaller than small so he did everything he could to make himself seem so much better and so much stronger. He used words like nigger, wanted to go kill them all, etc.

my friend makes action figures. he is working on a taxi driver figure about the size of the old gijoes (about 12" tall). He is going to have a mohawk and the guns in the sleeves and shit. he has made some six million dollar man figures in the past.

The fact that the character used the word nigger implies that he has a problem with race. The fact that his white wife is screwing a black man must be driving him nuts with inferiority. There are a couple layers there: how a man who thinks himself so superiour to a black man can be afraid of a black man, even when he has all the reason in the world to have the strength to go in there bare handed and rip some dick off. How a man who thinks himself so superior to women can be made so small by a woman. The only solstice in a fool like this is with a gun. The only thing that can give him the power, something big and strong to hide behind. You ask yourself next: how will this gun now betray him?

ahh...I see what u're saying. You're questioning why, at no point in scriptwriting, filming, edting, etc., why didn't he feel "eh, I got my point across, I don't need the bigotry." That's a good question for the director. I could only 'theorize" as some directors do things like that so you can judge how you react to it, some are "subconcious" bigots, etc.

You do raise a good question though, now that I think more into it

Of course,I love movies from the 70s (my favorite decade) but I wasn't too impressed with this film.When I watch it,I keep waiting and waiting for something to happen,but it never does,until the very end (when Deniro kills that pimp).The film moves at a slow pace.At the end,I was like "Is that all there is?".

But Robert Deniro is a great actor.He's done many great movies after this one.

The film was a trip... yeah, it was a little slow, but it's a true portrayal of what goes on in the mind of a nutjob who wants attention, by any means necessary.

The ironic ending is Scorcese at his best.
