Cold snap disrupts flights in South Africa
South Africa's main international airport faced major disruption on Wednesday after a deadly cold snap which saw the heaviest snowfalls in Johannesburg for more than two decades.

Departures from Johannesburg International Airport were delayed for up to three hours as workers cleared snow and ice from the runway, the airport said.

Flights arriving at the airport, the largest in Africa, were also delayed as they had to wait for parking bays to free up, a spokesman added.

Normal service had resumed by midday with the backlog cleared.

The overnight snowfalls also claimed the life of a homeless man who had been sleeping by a taxi rank in downtown Johannesburg, according to a spokesman for the emergency services department.

The South African Weather Service said between two and four inches of snow had fallen in the province of Gauteng, which includes Johannesburg and the administrative capital Pretoria.

Snow is rare in Johannesburg and the overnight fall was the heaviest since 1981.
