i have been at the farm a great deal of time lately.
i had been mowing grass and startled this this dove out of her ramshackle nest a day or two before. in a great display of maternal protection feathers were flying and she pretended to be wounded to keep me from her chicks. i left her alone and captured a less frantic but still guarded momma sitting on her two chicks a couple of days later.

so jealous of those of you that have captured such awesome moon pictures. this is about the best i have been able to do.

the reason i have been at the farm is to help my parents get ready for a century farm celebration. this trail marker marks the spot of my great grandparents house and also the general crossing point of three early wagon trails. a century ago they were already mostly out of use but imagine an earlier time of indians and buffalo and far off trading posts. such history.

what's left of a fallen down grainery. it overlooks the coulees where my great grandfather (at 55!) would take the stone boat down to the spring to get the water to run the household and water the livestock. the field in the foreground (midground?) could very well be where my grandmother helped cut the sod to build their homestead earthen house.

i just like how the sun turned out in this one...
barrels of water hauled on the stoneboat were replaced by a well in the yard but it was only 18 feet deep and froze up in the winter. only after my great grandfather's death was this windmill employed for a deeper well.

the all important wagon... now left forgotten. there was no train in the area yet so this is what you would haul your precious belongings in during the trip to the homestead. it is what you would haul your grain in to the elevator. once you got that all important money from selling your grain you could make the two day trip to the city (the same trip that now takes an hour) in order to get lumber or your winter supply of flour and sugar. since there were no trees it was also important for hauling your winter's supply of coal. if you ran out of coal in february you would be s.o.l. and frozen by spring so careful planning was very important.

the last photo in this series. such a dilemma... if i captured better definition in the foreground i lost the color in the background. however, sunset pictures like this make me think of my sister. as a self taught teenager she captured some stunning ones and frequently used props like wagonwheels, wheat, our horses or me on my bike

Very nice pictures, and the stories/info that go along with them make them more than twice as interesting. You obviously know a lot about farm life and are rightfully proud of your family's history, which still lives on through all these remnants of times past.

When is the celebration going to happen? How are the preparations going?

I'm keeping an eye on Skype as usual to see if your name might pop up one of these days.

I started planting some for her each spring when she was little and as a wonderful 15 yr old she still enjoys them

thanks everyone... retina the celebration happens this weekend.
i am only back in the city long enough to do my own yardwork,
pick up last minute things and figure out what i am going to wear.
preparations are going well but i think i will drop once the adrenaline wears off

mach beautiful pictures... i love the definition and depth perception you captured. i was planning on growing snaps in the front yard but haven't been around to water them so i didn't bother. my yellow daylillies and purple cosmos in the back are looking nice though... and the delphiniums are just starting to bloom. sooooo meant to send you some lumina pumpkin seed but never did. next year though if you are interested. do you grow your snaps from seed?

louis the farm belongs to my retired parents and is an amalgamation of my father's parents, grandparents, great uncle's farms as well as a neighbor's land. it is a small farm by modern standards... the 21 year old that is renting it this year farms two other places in addition to this. economies of scale and a depressing sign of the times
