She was lucky to even get that car. I didn't get a car until I turned 18 and it was a 15 year old Toyota neutral

I'm 20 and I still don't own a car, can't afford it with my income and my parents would NEVER think of buying me one either..

Anyway, this is just one of those shows you love to hate, but can't stop watching, because you feel so superior to those ignorant little brats.. They drive me crazy!! mad

I'm not from the States, and there's is nothing special about celebrating your 16th birthday here, (18th is tha bomb), so I'm just wondering if the picture the show gives is true in any way..? Is it really common to throw a retardedly HUUUGE party when a kid turns 16? confused

No, not partcularly. In the United States we do sort of have this novelty tradition of celebrating a daughter's Sweet 16, but not every family does it. And those who do generally don't go to such lengths like what you see on MTV. It's usually just a typical teenage party, but semi-formal where you dress up a little, with food, music, dancing. The guests are usually the kids extended family and real friends. Most guests bring simple, store bought gifts, you eat cake then ya go home. No camel rides, fire eaters, or helicopter arrivals in your ordinary Sweet 16 party. What they're showing on MTV is the vulgarized version of attention whores who crave tv airtime, and the only way they could get it was by behaing outrageously and dropping at least a quater of a million dollars on a birthday party for their kid's high school. wink

In the hispanic community the big thing is a quiceanera, a girl's 15th birthday.
But there is more of a religious aspect to it, it all starts in the church, you have a mass. Kinda like a wedding, but there is no groom and no one get's married. There is a full court traditionally 14 girls, 14 guys..plus the quiceanera and her escort. Then you go to a party, some do rent a hall, some do it at their homes. But, you do not have all the pomp and circumstance that these girls have on their day. There is a d.j. and food and dance. Typically it can cost 10,000-15,000 for the party. I never had one, and I have no plans on doing one for either of my 3 daughters, I would rather spend my money on their education. They all go to private school. But that's just me.

Yeah, you actually have your priorities in order and plain ol' common sense.
