I'd find it interesting to find out how the staunch pro-lifers feel about the morning after pill... Are they as against it as much as abortion?

In my experience, most pro-lifers I've come across act as aggressively towards their opposition to RU486 as they do to abortion. Preventing the egg from implanting itself on the uteran wall is just not the same thing as aborting a fetus. I can't see how anyone can be against this pill.

Supa, you're actually making a common mistake: the "morning after" pill and RU486 are not the same thing. The morning after pill (Emergency Contraception) can only be taken within 48 hrs. of unprotected sex and prevents the ovary from releasing an egg, or if it's already been released, from implanting. RU486 is also known as a"medical abortion" and can be taken through the 3rd month of pregnancy to end a pregnancy by causing spontaneous miscarriage.

The morning after pill is basically just really strong birth control pills. You take 1 right away, then another one 12 hrs. later.

Thank you for the education. I had only heard of RU486 and thought it was the morning after pill. Does the morning after pill have a medical label, i.e. RU486?

I'm sure there's a medical name, i.e., the active chemical, for Emergency Contraception/Morning After pill, but those names are the ones it typically goes by. That's what a person would ask for when they went to their doctor or to a family planning clinic. Lots of people still don't even realize it exists, and if they do, sometimes they get it confused with RU486. There's a big controversy now within the pharmacies/medical settings over Emergency Contraception because there are some pharmacists (including WalMart, big surprise rolleyes)who ethically have objections to dispensing EC. (They object to even stopping the egg from implanting or the ovary from releasing an egg) Yet women have a right to obtain it. It'll be interesting to see how it's resolved. I know of 2 women who were turned away--1 from a med center and 1 from a hospital--by nurses who said they refused to give it to them. Yet it's legal and women are supposed to have access to it. People are uninformed and imposing their own morality in what is supposed to be an impartial medical setting! Crazy!

I don't know the term either but since it's like a birth control pill there are probably several variances of it. There are about 80 or so versions of "the pill" but we still call them all "the pill" so calling it by emergency contraception or the morning after pill is widely accepted. It's simply a super duper concentrated shot of hormones.

I am not only saddened, but shocked and outraged to hear women would be denied this medical treatment from a medical professional! evil
Would these same institutions deny condom sales?
It's a shame women should have to visit another clinic (i.e. Planned Parenthood) to receive the medical treatment they SHOULD be getting from their own family practice doctor, especially when time is of the utmost importance as it is in these cases since it must be taken within a certain amount of time after unprotected sex, and the longer you wait, the less effective it can be.
That said, Planned Parenthood has got to be the most wonderful organization I can think of right now. Remind me to donate or volunteer there, or something!

I'll state this again. I find it irresponsible to make people have kids they don't want.
