Co-sign. Something is not right about this list. The Org Sci-Fi Crew has made up better list in previous threads Anxiety. I'm really suprised at Rotten Tomatoes.

i guess if it's a compilation of various ratings, it's bound to be a bit random. still, it's a goofy list. it looks like that movie and 'children of men' were thrown in just to have some films from this decade included.

Both of those are science fiction. tease It doesn't have to be spaceships or aliens to be scifi.

Galaxy Quest was great and also a heartful parody of the entire fandom phenomena. It's actually quite outstanding. It probably shouldn't outrank 2001 however.razz

Blade Runner was pioneering/influential in style and visual poetry, but really sucks as a functional narrative in my opinion. I felt that way back when it was in the theatres. Same goes for Tron the same summer. Much better as films were, The Thing, E.T., Star Trek II, Poltergeist, and Creepshow.

1982 forever! My absolute best summer as a scifi/horror fan.

Any poll that includes Flash Gordon on its best of list doesn't deserve any cred.

maybe if they meant the original serial. after all, without flash gordon there'd be no star wars, or any number of space opera-type films.

and whoa, wait. is "innerspace" that dogshit with martin short and dennis quaid?!? INNERSPACE makes the list and THE BLACK HOLE doesn't?!?!

I think you're right about Blade Runner, actually. Frankly I've never been able to view the film in a single sitting. I chalk its flaws up to less-than-perfect adaptation and poor editing, and some of the restored footage gives sense back to the story arc and makes the overall tale a little more thought-provoking. Still, its look and its atmostphere were crazy influential for Sci-Fi and a sort of resurgent Film Noir, and I think the story -- the concept if not the execution -- was one of the most effective applications of the old Eden/Prometheus/Golem/Pygmalion/Frankenstein created-cramps-creator theme that we've seen in modern popular culture.

Tron was also pretty wack -- and all those films you compared it to are superior -- but I think it did a lot for CGI and set and costume design. I wouldn't put it in the Top 10, but maybe in the Top 50 and definitely in the TOP 100 for aesthetic alone.

I also think the original Stepford Wives and Solient Green should be on there. And while I'm less sold on it, I'd make at least a small argument for Logan's Run.

And I promise to rent Galaxy Quest again and reassess. smile

I thought of that, too. And where is The Time Machine?

And how in the name of all that is holy is Forbidden Planet ranked so low?

No its the 1980's movie, it was schlock. The only redeeming factor that movie had was Flash walking around in a speedo for bout 3 minutes.
