WTF?!? | |

I guess Animated Sci-Fi films weren't considered. Heavy Metal, Akira, and Fantastic Planet come to mind.

What is interesting is that this past w/e I saw Children of Men and loved it. But we got into the discussion of "WHat is sci-fi" and the gray areas. Sure COM is set in the future, but is it really sci-fi? Spotless mind def gets the WTF from me too. But as you see there are horror and comedy offerings here I just don't get. And many movies like Back to the Future have Sci-fi elements, but aren't exactly sci-fi.
Yeah ET being tops really bums me out. Christian Zombie Vampires

Well, the original and true meaning of the term "science fiction" is exactly what the name implies; fictitious science, or if you will, "speculations based on science or technology", as Wikipedia puts it. Since such science doesn't exist it made sense that the sci-fi stories would often take place in the future, but there is no such requirement for it to fit the sci-fi category. Eternal Sunshine, although not what people immediately think of as sci-fi, does fit the category perfectly (and so does Back to The Future for that matter). I don't like it way up on the list either though, but that has more to do with the fact that I think it's a vastly overrated movie in general. typo edit [Edited 6/21/07 15:06pm]

I should add this is Tomato Ratings, which are the culmination of positive reviews vs bad ones.
But I still think that certian movies ought to be left off. Young Frankenstein...in the words of JOB Bluth.."Come On!" Christian Zombie Vampires

I'm really suprised at Rotten Tomatoes. i guess if it's a compilation of various ratings, it's bound to be a bit random. still, it's a goofy list. it looks like that movie and 'children of men' were thrown in just to have some films from this decade included.

That movie is fantastic. It's a perfect example of the kind of film I love the most: I never knew where it was going, what was going to happen, and it was amazing to look at. It should have been huge.

It should have been huge. The lack of a big star probably had a lot to do with that. I loved this movie except for the very hollywood ending. Christian Zombie Vampires

I should mention that this is based on Tomato Ratings, which are good reviews vs bad. SO these are the "Best rated movies" Not really a comprehensive list of the best sci-fi. I think they need to change the "genres" of some of the movies they were condsidering for this list or exclude some that really are not sci-fi. Christian Zombie Vampires

Any poll that includes Flash Gordon on its best of list doesn't deserve any cred. The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything.
