THE SECRET http://www.thesecret.tv/home.html
Has anyone read the book or understand the concept? My sister insisted that this was the most powerful thing she's read in ages, and gave me her copy of the book when she was done. I read about 3 chapters of it on the plane back to the States, but found that it seemed to "Repackage" the concepts of Creative Visualization and positive affirmation with new terms and more of a "umph" feel to it. I admit, the book seems to be the Kevin Trudeau version of Shakta Gawain's material, but other than that I don't know much about it. I still have a lot of the book to read.

I heard about that book on Tv. I really like spicy food. I mostly put Jalapenos on a lot of my food.

Thanks. I believe in Creative Visualization and positive affirmation. I've seen it work to some extent in my own life (though I don't believe that whole Universe serves you stuff--the law of supply and demand negates that shit). I just found it to be sort of unfair that they take something that is already there, and revamp it like it's new. It screams "money making propaganda" moreso than some altruistic way of helping folks. Shakta Gawain may be a hippy and shit, but her creative visualization material seemed more genuine. I'll keep reading "The Secret" though to see if it offers anything new.

I've seen the dvd...
I took it as a reminder of some faith action, some creative visualization, and some karma stuff. Just packaged well. Good reminder of taking some responsibility for your existence.

It was a bit too metaphysical for my good Christian self BUT I was able to see some principles that I could apply.

I remember lilmissmissy did a thread about 'The Secret' not so long back.
One of my mates watched this a few months ago and has been non-stop about it ever since. Apparently, he was so overcome with emotion that he burst into tears at the end and has had a complete spriritual breakthrough. Seriously, virtually every conversation we have, 'The Secret' gets mentioned at some point. I watched the dvd and had to switch it off after 20 minutes. I couldn't get past all the cheesy music and bad acting but I can see what it was getting at. But if it works for some people, great. . [Edited 6/18/07 7:07am]

It was featured on Oprah a while back....almost brainwashed me to go find this book at all costs.....I kept asking myself as I watched the show, "what the fuck have I been doing with my life?"
.....then I realized Oprah was hawking yet ANOTHER self help book that she was swearing by..... .....so I didn't feel so pitiful and useless afterwards....cuz IMHO (emphasis on MY OPINION so I don't get crucified by the Oprah hordes.... ) Oprah is a nutbag..... He was like a cock who thought the sun had risen to hear him crow.

But you are very right.....a lot of the tripe in self help books is just plain old common sense.....yet the masses treat it like its manna from heaven.....that nugget of salvation in a book that will change their lives......... Ex-Moderator | It sounds cheesy to me.
Coworkers were talking about it the other day and passing it around. I don't imagine I'll ever read it. |
