Instrumental muisic in congrigational worship. yes or no?

Jehova Witnesses don't use intrumental music in praise and worship right?

I attended a kingdom hall once (chasing a girl) and I noticed it was all acapella. Could a witness please tell me if this goes for all kingdom halls?

If so, I don't think we will ever get a strait up praise and worship CD from Prince.

Which is ok by me. Taste in music always divided every church I went too. I think it's good for those to leave intrumental music out of worship. IMHO...

The church I go too is so diverse. You got folks that are as country as can be side by side with strait up Motown R&B folks. I know for a fact if we were singing songs with a county flair too it I'd have to sit that one out and more likely leave the room entirely (can't stomach country music) and I'm sure the same might go for the country folks too if the church were to... "funk it up like James Brown".

I wondered what Jehova Witnesses thought about this subject.

Personally, I like to hear Bach in my ears when I want to "rest a while under his wing" (in that personal time) . But I agree not in church.

WRONG FORUM!!!

and i don't think there is any rule about plugged or unplugged music with the JW's... I gotta an uncle who started a band, and they plugged in...and he was/is an elder...i think they just choose low key soothing music for their kingdom halls...

I am currently a member of The Church of Christ which does not use instrumental music in congregational worship. That is not easy for me, but it is not a big enough issue to make me stop going.

Don't know about the JW's.
I'm firmly planted in denial

no, really.

It's a ligitamate argument. For someone like me, music has always been a very spiritual form of expression, and I'm sure many here agree on that. Perhaps I started the thread wrong. I dunno. But this issue has always been a flip / flop for me. Although I find it hard to fathom heaven without a string and horn section, many churches leave it out of worship due to the diversity of musical tastes and the lack of evidence of instramental music being used in the new testement church.

I used to go to a particular church mainly because the band memebers were monster players and man are they funky! Now I go to a church that sings only acapella.

Sometimes I miss it, but I can also see the flip side that it could also divide people due to just plain 'ol taste.

I mean seriously, flip on the channel TBN, "Trinity Brodcast Network". I don't find the banjo and steel guitar, and that crazy lookin lady with the purple wig and four foot eye lashes to be making a joyful noise!

Sounds more like the movie deliverence than church.

So anyway, music.
How can music be guided tward unification in the church?

That's where I'm going now! Same here as far as being an issue whether to go or not. The bible studies are excelent! and people have really been like family. Three weeks ago, my wife and I had our first child and the church is giving us a shower. I don't know but a handful of people there personally and it kind of feels weird taking things from strangers. But they are so genuine. Like faimily!

I started this discussion, mainly because music is such a powerful thing and can be very spiritual and inspiring. So can church. So the question, really, I suppose is does the two really mix and unify?

Oh,

I thought about that before I posted here. Although the subject is concerning music, the sub heading for "Music: Non-Prince" is "Discuss other artists here".

So since I wasn't talking about any particular artist it seemed better fit in the General Discussion Forum.

I figured Matt would move this thread if I am wrong.

Salright?

No, that is not right. The only
time I have ever sung without music at our Kingdom Hall
is when lightening
knocked the power out...sounded pretty good, too.
Now, I am told that our African brothers prefer to sing
acapella...in 4 part harmony.
I've heard a tape of this and it is truly beautiful.

We also have several releases of spritual music on CDs.
They are distributed at the Kingdom Halls...no charge.
Very fine musicians (many professional) contribute to these.
They are orchestral in nature...and some are pretty upbeat.
So...how's everybody doing? smile

Our music is beautiful actually and instrumental, there are 223 songs in all and my husband and I have the collection. You can hear the music (a chosen song or 2) played before the meeting starts at our assemblies and conventions. We also sing in our Kingdom Halls to specially selected songs, usually ones that tie in with our discussion for the day. I also play the music any time I feel like it at home and it is very relaxing. I love it. Our singing praises to God is very different, more subtle, sweet really and although it is an important part of our worship, it doesn't take away from what we focus upon during our worship in any way.
