Private Joe Bauers, the definition of "average American", is selected by the Pentagon to be the guinea pig for a top-secret hibernation program. Forgotten, he awakes 500 years in the future. He discovers a society so incredibly dumbed-down that he's easily the most intelligent person alive.

Yes! I "obtained" this last year.

It's very, very funny.

It only had a limited release in the U.S. and U.K. There's been a lot of speculation online as to the reasons behind this. The common concensus is that the studio was unhappy with major corporations being portrayed in a none-too flattering manner.

For instance, in the future, you can get a handjob at Starbucks!

I have to agree with this. I was sooo looking forward to it since I loved Office Space and I like Luke Wilson, but it was short on both laughs and clever ideas. A movie that aims to make fun of stupidity really has to be more intelligent than this in order to work.

I agree that it wasn't great, but it had some very funny scenes, and it was definitely a great idea. Almost too good, it really has me worried.

It's the details of what defines an idiot that really made it funny to me, the glimpse of him wearing Crocs, peoples' love of jet skiing, the belief in electrolytes, the desire to see others' balls get mutilated, the garbage suituation, and on and on.

Most resonant was the reluctance of intelligent people to breed.

Retina pointed out that its major flaw was being stupid itself, and I agree. But it is a comedy afterall. I'd maintain that it's worth a watch when you're feeling stupid yourself, say, when you're drunk/stoned.

That's the problem with "great idea movies." The producers assume an idea is enough, and just work out the rest (things like script) as if they're minor details.

I never saw it...but my sister-in-law (who's usually very picky with films) did, and she claims that it's actually a fairly decent movie.
