So org people, should I be a nice guy....

and let this kid whose been absolutely shitty and atrocious the whole last half of the year turn in his final project that was due Friday today? He basically has a high F at around 56%. If I give him credit on the final project he'll pass with a D -. This kid is all wanna be thug, talks a bunch of shit, gives me problems, but came in today during snack and was weeping like no other saying "come on Mr.C, I wanna walk in the ceremony with all my homies, I know I been a bad kid in your class but just do me this one favor." Grades are do this afternoon. He is on the no walk list cause of my class. My logic tells me forget this little punk, but my heart says cosmic fate will reward me and maybe this kid will find Jesus and hope in people and not treat his next teacher like crap and go on to win a Pulitzer. Well anyway, I have till 2:30 to decide his fate. Should I go with logic or kindess? neutral

See the other tough thing is mom cand grandma came in at the beginning of my prep (period where I have no class but just prepare, so I basically have a 1 and a 1/2 hour lunch) and gave me the water works and told me he is a really good boy at heart and that if he passed it could change his life and get him off the streets.. blah ... blah ... blah. I hate seeing moms and grandmas weep neutral

Have him promise that if you help him he promises to change his ways and become a better person, if you help him, he'll have dedicate himself into helping someone else in the future as well as study harder and never fail duty again...

Give him a chance to prove how regretful and motivated he is by giving him an extra assignment. Preferably a tough one. If he completes it on time and does it well you can feel justified in following your heart just as you can feel justified in failing him if he doesn't even take this second chance.

I can tell the kid took his time on the assignment, but bear in mind this is the same kid who tried to steal my cell phone earlier this year! So I have grounds for nastiness.

What a tough call Karma.

He's barely getting through any of his classes.

He has an awful attitude.

He stole from you. He didn't try to, he did and got caught.

Considering all that, if it looks like he worked really hard on the project I'd bet the crying mom and grandma did most, if not all, of the work.

One side of the coin...pass him and get him out of your school.

Other side of the coin... flunk him, have to deal with him more.

I say those are the only two sides of the coin. It doesn't look like he's going to learn any life lessons at this point.

Pass him and hand him over to the school of hard knocks.

Anxiety

is the class something he's passionate about? then fail him and make him learn discipline.

is it something he doesn't care that much about and he just has to take the class because it's required? give him the break. why waste another year of both of your time?

maybe that wasn't the soundest logic in the world, but that's my two cents. lol

either way, it looks as if this kid will end up in the criminal justice system if something doesn't change. The mother should have walked in and said....FAIL him. I would be more upset that you've passed him and I knew he didn't deserve it.

Does he need another chance or is this kid really a true thug? There is a difference.

Too many of our kids are getting passed on because some don't want to "deal" with them.

The question is, what type of TEACHER are you?

I see both sides of the arguement I have had friends along with myself that had to go to tutoring and go to study weekends at schools just to pass math tests, and it made us angry that other students were just getting passed for no reason when everyone knew that they did not try.

Howevever, to add I am sure this happens in schools across the country.
