mdiver said: When it comes to comedy the Brits have the Americans whopped most definately. If you look at the way comedies have been altered it is just a different taste and culture issue. For example The Office in the UK where Ricky Gervais and Steven Merchant wrote it was way more sarcastic, ironic and down right cringe worthy that the awful US version that went all mainstream and changed the whole dynamic of the comedy.
I guess it is taste. I have spent a while trying to show a shanti some new UK comedy that even some Brits dont get on with and she loved it....not sure all Americans get it but give it 10 years and it will get there...a bit like Monty Python did. I wondered if I had heard of The Office with different actors! I think they show the original Office on PBS. Right? I really like spicy food. I mostly put Jalapenos on a lot of my food.

Taking into consideration that most of the funniest American comedians are Canadian, I'm easily going to give this one to the Brits.
Monty Python alone beats the tar out of anyone on any given day.

Wit & writing in general is probably England's greatest contribution to art. Certainly not food, painting or classical music.
I find Brits to be more witty. Americans are very funny, but in a more Three Stooges kind of way. Americans' wit owes much to England, too. [Edited 6/12/07 13:05pm] My Legacy

That's what I thought about the American "Office" until I actually watched it. The first season followed the British story lines, but the second season broke away from it and the show really came into it's own. Not to mention that Gervais and Merchant are actually involved in the production of the show. Honestly, Steve Carrell is great on that show, and the scripts are brilliant.

I was reluctant to watch the American Office, but I think it's brilliant. More American, yes, but just as good as the original. And you're right, it's become its own show now that it's veered away from the old plotlines. My Legacy

Because I think it's way edgier than most American comedies. Especially episodes like "Sensitivity Day" or the one in which Phyllis gets a "Bushiest Beaver" award. I don't know what you mean by "watered down." Alot of the humor is anything but watered down. Did you really watch the whole show or just a few episodes? 'Cause that's exactly what I thought after watching just the season 1 episodes. By the finale of season 2 I was hooked, and when Jim put in for a transfer and blurted out to Pam that he was in love with her I actually teared up. Just like I did when Tim turned off his mic and confessed his love to Dawn.
