One last thing, what food the dog eats and what shampoo is used also have MAJOR impact on how much the dog sheds.

Shampoo is a major factor as a person may be allergic to the shampoo residue
( or any other pet product put on animal ) then the dog itself

even the flea and tick meds

Oh yes. If I were Muse I would sure as hell not use any neurotoxin tick/flea treatment cos it can cause the dogs skin to break out in a major way.

I use zero flea tick topical meds on my dogs... makes them break out and I am sensitive to petting them more as well

How do you go about that? Just backcomb a section?

Im actually trying to save myself a little bit too... the animals I will be seeing will be seeking a home after being left to be killed. I am a bleeding heart and it will KILL me to have to walk away from an animal I fall for if it proves to strong an allergin for him.

Yeah, you just take some hair and scrape some skin flakes off and put it in a plastic bag. If it proves too expensive to make an allergen out of it you can ask the shelter or whatever to comb the dog some (which will get both hair and skin off) and then Anthony gets to touch it a lot, testing little by little like putting it next to his skin, breathe in it etc...
One last thing, what food the dog eats and what shampoo is used also have MAJOR impact on how much the dog sheds. If you like to discuss it more, PM me cos I think I'll bore the genpop to tears lol

Hypoallergenic dog breeds

....

Tibetan Terrier

...

woot! I was going to suggest a Tibetan Terrier. I LOVE them! I don't even like dogs, but my friend's roommate had a Tibetan Terrier (Buster) and I frickin' fell in love with that dog. mushy

Tibetan Terriers aren't related to other terrier breeds, they are called that b/c when they were brought to England they were mis-classified due to their size. They are considered the holy dog of Tibet, raised by monks in the Himalayas. The monks considered it bad luck to sell them, but would give them to travelers for good luck and to keep them safe. That is how they were brought to "the West". They are a medium sized dog and very calm/laid back. Even though they have long hair, they have a double coat and the long hair is like human hair.

They come in all different colors: golden, brown, black, grey, combinations.

Tibetan Terrier Club of America: http://www.ttca-online.org/

American Kennel Club: http://www.akc.org/breeds.../index.cfm

"The Tibetan Terrier is highly intelligent, sensitive, loyal, devoted and affectionate. The breed may be cautious or reserved. Fault--Extreme shyness."

http://www.tibetanterrier.com

Look how cute they are!

Yeah, I have seen the lists... was looking for personal experiences more. We had great success with chihuahuas. She just couldnt sleep in his bed.

Little man has taken 4 shots a week for 6 months now. I want the brave little soldier to narrow it down as time goes by and I cant take him to a shelter... We have to mix him with one animal only for success.

I have a westie - great intelligent little dog

I raised and showed Dobes - same for them

groomed and showed Bichon Frisé - nice little dogs with great personalities

owned a Bouvier des Flandres - OH THE POWER

if I were to go out today and gain another dog It would be a greyhound resuceretired racer or an Italian Greyhound based on the reading up I have done on both breeds over the past 3 yrs

shake Italian Greyhounds are way too high strung! My friend has one and that dog has destroyed her house. They cannot leave it alone for even an hour or it will tear everything to pieces b/c it does not like to be alone. They have to leave the TV on when they go to work.

She had some other college friends staying with her and everyone was at the beach except one girl was home with Gucci (<--the dog). That dog tore a hole in the couch cushion, dragged the trash out of the trash can and "buried" it in her bed, amoung other things. All b/c the girl took a shower & left Gucci "alone"...even though she kept the bathroom door open and kept talking to the dog.

They are too high strung/nervous for my tastes (same with cocker spaniels). I don't like yippy, frantic dogs.

I am not sure if this will help.
You can get products 2 help, one is called Petal Cleanse it removes dander saliva and urine from the coat, it also moisturizers and conditions the animals coat and skin and reduces the amount of shedding. It is recomended by York Test Veterinary services they also have other products that maybe of use 2 u smile

I've known some people who had success with those sorts of things. And people who haven't, but I think they're worth a try. In general, I get the impression that regular bathing helps more than anything.

Karen, be really skeptical about claims that any breed is "hypoallergenic". There's no such thing. It depends on the person.

What about Greyhound rescue? They are the SWEETEST dogs, and they have very manageable/washable coats.

Petal cleanse is one all the vets seemed 2 recommend here I know people who have used the product and they have said it works, i have never used it so wouldnt know but you maybe onto something about the regular bathing but who knows worth trying if desperate.

If memory serves me right didn’t the cross the Labrador and the poodle 2 create guide dogs for allergy sufferers yet people where still having allergic reactions. I’m surprise WHWT (Westie) is on the list I help with rescue groups and they refuse to give a westie to anyone who has allergies i personally would be very wary.

Designer dogs my ASS, it's all just attempts at making bastard breeding appealing to make people buy them and so earn more money. There are enough unwanted dogs that are pure breds, the world doesn't need uncontrolled breeding of crosses added to it. neutral

I have dog and cat alergies too and short hair are worse. All becasue you can't see the hair doesn't mean it's not shedding all those little antigens around the house.

Infact super long hair dogs are often better becasue they groom themselves outside and long hairs don't float around as much (they just stick to the rug lol). Pastoral dogs (collies and the like) or long haired working dogs like retreviers are good kid dogs and and don't tend to have much of an alergy issue.
