Seeking doggie info

info My son is into his alergy shots over 6 months soon. Looking for any personal info anyone has on dogs that are easy on the allergies. Trying to find a breed that he likes and works. I know a poodle would be a shoe in but he has no love for the breed and chihuahuas and small breeds are out.

I am seeking to resque as well.....

just looking to gain a little info.

Yeah, I have seen the lists... was looking for personal experiences more. We had great success with chihuahuas. She just couldnt sleep in his bed.

Little man has taken 4 shots a week for 6 months now. I want the brave little soldier to narrow it down as time goes by and I cant take him to a shelter... We have to mix him with one animal only for success.

There are no guarantees that mixed dogs will inherit the hair/shedding traits of the participating breeds. Also, sadly most of the time people who are allergic to dogs aren't allergic to the hair but to the mites in the dogs' skin. So unless the child is tested and treated for the appropriate allergy, there are absolutely no guarantees.
Then I'd also say that most of the breeds above require regular maintenance that you cannot provide yourself unless you're an experienced groomer, all the schnauzers, poodles, bichons and terriers require this type of care.

Off the top of my head, Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier and Basenji are no-no's cos they're both decidedly untrustworthy around children.

Designer dogs my ASS, it's all just attempts at making bastard breeding appealing to make people buy them and so earn more money. There are enough unwanted dogs that are pure breds, the world doesn't need uncontrolled breeding of crosses added to it. neutral

I have a westie - great intelligent little dog

I raised and showed Dobes - same for them

groomed and showed Bichon Frisé - nice little dogs with great personalities

owned a Bouvier des Flandres - OH THE POWER

if I were to go out today and gain another dog It would be a greyhound resuceretired racer or an Italian Greyhound based on the reading up I have done on both breeds over the past 3 yrs

Actually, the breed is "Coton de Tulear."

My sister has one of these. I've always been allergic to dogs, but Bella (the dog) can even lick my face and I don't have any allergic reaction.

Very pretty dogs, nice temperament, high energy. They're small, though -- which means lots of trips outside. (Small dog = small bladder.)

Nah, they don't need to go outside more often than other dogs. They don't accumulate as much urine as big dogs naturally, it's all in relation to their size. If they can't hold it in for awhile it's just lack of training.

I know you are very right about mixed breeds so they are out. We did test and are being specifically treated. Huge bummer on the Basenjis as they dont affect him. This is the sort of stuff I am looking for thank you. Gives me more to go on then a list. Once I isolate a breed I will take Anthony to socialize with the animal and will know in no time if it works for him.

Once you isolate a breed you can take hair and skin samples from it and test on Anthony, that way you'll be as sure as you can ever be. smile

Good info I'll look into it.

See, each individual is a little different but I have had good luck with talking to others with allergies in deciding weather or not to even visit a home based on the breed they have on hand.

I am inclined to consider that too... It is likely that once my decision is made I will aquire an adult rescue. My family rescues pit bulls. and both dogs even though severly abused by their original owners are they most delightful animals. I need to be responsible though and feel it is unsafe to do so for my home.

How do you go about that? Just backcomb a section?

Im actually trying to save myself a little bit too... the animals I will be seeing will be seeking a home after being left to be killed. I am a bleeding heart and it will KILL me to have to walk away from an animal I fall for if it proves to strong an allergin for him.

Yeah, you just take some hair and scrape some skin flakes off and put it in a plastic bag. If it proves too expensive to make an allergen out of it you can ask the shelter or whatever to comb the dog some (which will get both hair and skin off) and then Anthony gets to touch it a lot, testing little by little like putting it next to his skin, breathe in it etc...
One last thing, what food the dog eats and what shampoo is used also have MAJOR impact on how much the dog sheds. If you like to discuss it more, PM me cos I think I'll bore the genpop to tears lol

Shampoo is a major factor as a person may be allergic to the shampoo residue
( or any other pet product put on animal ) then the dog itself

even the flea and tick meds
