Tapes were nice, I had less problems back in the days when I was using tapes, whether it´s VHS or audiotapes. With CDrs and DVD you always seem to lose data after a certain time, or the media gets scratched too easily and only lasts a couiple of years. I still have some tapes from 85 in good condition though they were cheap and not meant for long time archiving purposes...

The sound seemed a bit thicker, too. And the formats didn´t change as quickly as they do today, like for instance Minidisk...who remembers Minidisk ? I bought a minidisc recorder and tons of empty discs and then the fucking thing crashed a month after its warranty had expired. Now I still have tons of music on minidisc but can´t play it anymore and don´t feel like buying another minidisc recorder again.

I use my minidisc player to digitally record foley and sound effects for my short films. It's perfect for that.

Too bad. the warmth of analog sound will be missed.

One advantage with tape is when you're listening to audio books since you can stop and resume at the exact same spot without delay or hassle. Most cd players don't remember where you were if they're stopped or if the power is switched off and then on again.

Also the size and toughness of the tapes were great, as well as the look and feel.

I still wouldn't want to go back to using them as a primary music source though. The skip function on cd players was a total revolution, and the clarity of the sound makes up for the lack of "depth".

Tapes for me have always been sancrosanct. I've always been an expert mixtape maker and mix CDs just aren't the same thing. A mixtape requires effort, careful thought and real EMOTION, dammit. A CD-R is more convenient, but...just doesn't have that same loving feeling.

I don't think that radios with tape players are sold anymore.

i dunno about that. the more i play around with my Nero software, the more i'm able to play with crossfades and effects and little tweaky things that give my CD comps a special touch. i'm by no means great at it yet, but when i'm able to segue a live track into a studio track with a good transition, it makes me happy. it also has other filters that adds reverb, messes with the sounds of the vocals, etc., if i want to get really artsy-fartsy (which i usually don't). so i don't feel like i'm just clicking on a buncha tracks and burning them to a CD for someone...i am actually able to mix everything together much more precisely than i was able to do when i made tape comps.

though i know what you mean to an extent. you actually had to sit there and LISTEN to each song you were adding on a tape, not just drag and drop.

minidisks are still in full use at our place, they are more robust than CDs because of that case - the band use them for sequences.

I never liked tapes.

Went from LP's straight to CD's.

And I like the speed and ease with which you can move things around if they aren't working. Making a mix tape is all about careful planning, but with a mix CD you can drop stuff in where you want it and move it around before you burn, replace what doesn't fit, etc. I never got into mixing (yet) but damned if I don't spend time making sure each song transitions perfectly into the next sometimes. lol

Tapes were a bit crap. I always got mine chewed up or unravelled. I damaged my parents copy of Sign O The Times making ´Starfish and Coffee´ slow down for 5 seconds or so!
