The Road to Machu Pichu is a tremendous thing! On one of your trips you should make it to Guatemala! You would love it! Carpenters bend wood, fletchers bend arrows, wise men fashion themselves.

Maybe just cultural differences? They look well fed and clothed. I didn't say anything about not being well fed or clothed, I said they have dirty faces and look lonely.

A lot of non-Westerners don't have our weird obsession with dirt-free children, and I wonder if your impression of them looking lonely comes from a perception that they aren't being cared for properly. Or, maybe their lives are really rough, I have no idea. I'm just sayin'. oh noes, prince is gonna soo me!!1!

The dirt on their faces that could easily have been wiped off adds to the negative impression, sure, but it's not all about that. I think they look lonely because they're like 3 years old and hanging out at a street corner by themselves while a total stranger is taking their picture. Plus they look sad and lost.

Was it any difficult to breathe in the thin air? A little. Although we had some coco tea to help with the altitude. The worst thing was getting up at 2.30am in the dark to climb back up the canyon! There's Joy In Expatriation.

That's so cool. I wish I was as adventurous as you are. I am just back from 2 weeks in Trinidad/Tobago and hiking the rain forests and watching Giant Leatherback Turtles laying their eggs and holding the new born hatchlings in my hand is just some days away and still already somehow unreal. I can only imagine how many amazing things you must have experienced and will experience soon .
