Do you garden?

I planted bulbs today. smile

I've never planted anything in my life. lol My upstairs neighbor works for a flower and plant company and is a licensed landscape artist so he generally takes care of everything in our shared back yard, but I have a little walkway that leads to my porch (and private entrance) that is kinda "mine". Last year he pulled up all the weeds and laid down a mix of flowers but since the area is completely shaded by the pretty trees that grow along side in between our house and the neighbors' nothing came up. pout

I was shopping with a friend who was picking seeds and such up today, so I got some bulbs for things that are supposed to grow in shaded areas. Hostas and baby's breath and a couple other things I can't remember the name of. I spent all afternoon pulling weeds, I've got the bulbs in the ground and they're watered.

Now what? lol

When can I expect to see something come out of the ground?

I love messing in the garden, you can get a rooting powder to help the plants settle quicker but always remember to use a good compost if you don’t I find some of the plants just die.

OK, what is compost, how do I know if it's "good" and what do I do with it?

I really have never done this before. My nieghbor hasn't been home today to ask him. lol

First u dig a good size hole for the plant then put the compost in then the plant, put compost all around the plant then water it. The compost is basically good nutrition for the plant and will help root and grow it.
You can purchase compost from a garden centre, or you can make ur own compost from garden and household waste. I have a compost bin at end of garden I put all the waste in.
Here is a link of some things u can make compost from http://www.gardenorganic....post_1.php

I use horse manure & garden & household waste if I go on one of my crazy planting sessions (something I do rather often in the spring redface ) I sometimes purchase a huge bag of organic compost it costs only £9.

smile U maybe in luck the person who did that part of the garden last year may have put a good top soil & compost in the ground so ur plants may survive.

I hired a landscaper for the lawn because I was spending entirely TOO much time mowing & edging every week AND it still looked like shit.

Now we plant flowers every spring and my job is to water and weed them.

I never used compost but I think that I need to because the flowers are having a hard time growing. The soil is very sandy. Next year I'll need to do that.

Your life sounds idillic Mach. Outside shower, torches. wow. I would love an outside shower, but because I live in a typically British way (houses cramped into tiny spaces) I think my neighbours might get a bit annoyed, seeing all my bits dangling biggrin
