Twisted Ducth "reality" show

Whatcha think about this?

http://www.rte.ie/news/20...itytv.html

A Dutch broadcaster is standing by its decision to air a reality show in which a terminally ill woman selects a recipient for her kidneys from three contestants.

Some parliaments members have called the programme, to be broadcast this week, 'wretched' and unethical.

On 'The Big Donor' this Friday, a 37-year-old woman will choose from three people with kidney problems.

Her choice will be based on the contestants' history, profile and conversations with their families and friends.

Viewers will be able to send text messages advising her during the 80-minute show.

'The chance for a kidney for the contestants is 33%. This is much higher than that for people on a waiting list. You would expect it to be better but it is worse," said BNN Chairman Laurens Drillich

BNN says it wants to highlight the difficulties faced by kidney sufferers in getting donor organs as a tribute to BNN founder Bart de Graaff who died of kidney failure five years ago, despite several transplants.

falloff Oh fuck, after a week of international discussion & commotion the show finally broadcasted live on television tonight.....people had been talking about disgrace & distaste, the nature of the show was just wrong! So the show went on, the 'donor' was being introduced and so were the 'contestants'. Everything was highlighted, who they were and why they were in need of a healthy new kidney.....Then, at the climax of the show when the incurably ill woman is about to choose which contestant is about to win her kidney after she dies, the whole thing turns out to be a mediastunt!

No kidney was to be given away like this!!!!! The purpose was to create awareness for the need of kidney-donors! The international press was there to report.....The incurable woman and contestants were actors!

Pretty cool stunt, and pretty much in the nature of BNN!

Rumor is that Sanjaya is one of the contestants.
So I'm sure that the "33% chance" does not apply to him.

I don't give a fuck about what people believed or not, I do find it a good thing for the fact that they've succeeded in creating controversy/awareness of the shortage of kidney-donors in this country. Sofar they have collected over 12.000 new donor-conicils just today, Mr-Bitch&Whine-About-Everything.....light another one up, my friend!

I'm glad it turned out to be a hoax ... it would have been heartbreaking to have chosen one person for transplant and not another.

I had mixed feelings about the show from the start - on the one hand it increases awareness but on the other, making money from people's illnesses (and I'm sure Endemol have made millions) shows how much society is declining morally. Have Endemol said whether they will donate their profits to kidney research?

However, it was a good result. I haven't seen the show but I think it may play an important role in helping to make doner cards more "cool", which can't be a bad thing, surely?

I think it's sick, the problem is Endemol DON'T care about people or serious issues. They use that as a smokescreen to sell their shitty programmes.

They USE people and issues to make cras and gutter trash tv, it's like the BB race row in the UK...Andy Duncan was quoted as saying the race row was a godsend for Celebrity BB this year as it was turning out to be the most boring series yet.

They USED and enflamed the words of housemates to stir up controversy and media attention to garner viewers and ratings....the same thing they've done with this show in Holland.

Endemol did the same crap in the UK whereby they conned some fools into thinking they were going into space...i shit you not.

errr ... that was actually my point, but as abierman agrees with you, I'll accept that I didn't make it very well.

I believe that Endemol, if they had any intention of acting in the public's interest, should have donated their profits to renal research. But of course we know they won't. I just didn't like to make the assumption that they haven't (we didn't get the show here) and then be flamed in case they'd done the decent thing, which would have shocked me, perhaps more than the idea of the show itself. wink

Or are you saying that Endemol made no money from producing the show? It was certainly reported here in the UK as being an Endemol-spawned show. Perhaps they did, after all, donate all the profits they made to some worthy cause?
