sorry AaronForever, evicting people is part of what i do for a living
yes, you should supply your deadbeat roommate's address. absolutely. it's too bad that you're a named defendant, but that's how some leases work. you might contact the equivalent of the legal aid society for your state - there are attorneys who handle this stuff 'pro bono'- without charging you. failing that, you can appear on your own behalf- 'pro se'. in MN, the judge who hears your case will usually order defendants to make payments over a schedule which can be negotiated at the time of trial. so if you don't have the $$ to fork over at time of trial, you will likely be given an opportunity to do so over time. it would also be well worth your time and effort to have the record of this court proceeding expunged after it's concluded. otherwise your next prospective landlord might see that in the court file and assume you're not a good candidate for tenancy. again, sorry this is happening to you. i hope it works out in the end ps: the above is not to be taken as actual legal advice

yes, you should supply your deadbeat roommate's address. absolutely. it's too bad that you're a named defendant, but that's how some leases work. done. and i'll probably be finding out later today or tomorrow if they actually got the paperwork back and issued him a summons at the address i provided them. you might contact the equivalent of the legal aid society for your state - there are attorneys who handle this stuff 'pro bono'- without charging you. failing that, you can appear on your own behalf- 'pro se'.
i'll probably be doing it on my own behalf, though my mother is a paralegal and is, i think, going to get advice from one of the lawyers, and she'll be in court with me. in MN, the judge who hears your case will usually order defendants to make payments over a schedule which can be negotiated at the time of trial. so if you don't have the $$ to fork over at time of trial, you will likely be given an opportunity to do so over time.
my mom says that since i'm disputing the debt and they haven't gotten the stuff to me that they told me to request, then there probably won't be a judgement at my first court date. :hoping: what do you think? I'm in IL, btw. it would also be well worth your time and effort to have the record of this court proceeding expunged after it's concluded. otherwise your next prospective landlord might see that in the court file and assume you're not a good candidate for tenancy.
well, if it comes down to it, i'll be able to borrow the money to pay this off before a judgement is made against me, with the stipulation that the roommate signs a contract stating that he'll pay me the full amount or at least part of it (i haven't decided how to approach it yet). he's not ruining my credit any more than he already has (there were other incidents while we were living together). gain, sorry this is happening to you. i hope it works out in the end
ps: the above is not to be taken as actual legal advice thanks!

Never mind. Nevermind is one word, smarty. Actually it's not, smartass. "Never mind" is an idiom that, when used correctly, is two separate words.
