What's with all the movie sequels?

Why are a lot of movies getting sequels? Harry Potter, POTC, Shrek, etc etc.
I really like spicy food. I mostly put Jalapenos on a lot of my food.

It's considered easier than creating new properties...which can then spawn sequels. giggle

Yeah, that's about it. Forgot about a few of those. Although, Evan isn't technically a sequel since Steve Carrell isn't playing the same guy as he did in Bruce Almighty. At least, I don't think he is; Evan seems like a nice guy. giggle

Is that actually coming out this year? Last I heard, there were still rumors they were waiting for Angelina Jolie to say "yes".

Because Hollywood is overrun with unimaginative studio executives whose knuckles are permanently blanched white from wringing out the very last dollar possible from even moderately successful ideas and because, generally speaking, the moviegoing public continues to willingly hand over the cash to watch cinematic rehashes and regurgitations, predictable plotlines and superfluous special effects.

You took the words right out of my mouth. Most sequels are garbage and a waste of time. I can't believe how many people spend their money to watch crappy movies.

I saw Spiderman 3 and every preview was for a sequel, and most were the third.

that would eb fine if they weren't all worse than the originals.

ya know I would have been there with that one man in the trench coat who sat all alone in the back row. When I saw Grafitti bridge in the theater, I sat alone with my son, as some scary looking man in a trench coat sat in the back row. eek
