I personally think that this should be a sticky and also we should aim to help this young lad by doing something positive - as was mentioned before - some equipment which would make Dave's life considerably better. smile

I brought this thread back up and cannot believe that it is not a sticky!!!

I cannot understand how to send money through paypal - even though I have an account - so I have sent a cheque. It will be in english pounds so they will have to convert it.

I have sent a couple of emails to David and he has replied. I have my first american pen friend!! biggrin

Can someone explain step-by-step how paypal works? I will gladly donate.

If not, I'll just send a check through the mail.

i think dook did address that in his last post, retina. the way i see this request is more like addressing the $50 from medicade per month.

i will send a donation to show support, i will write to say hello and tell him what a crazy wonderful friend he has in dook (paul) and i will include a postcard as it would be nice to get correspondence from all over the world.

it's nothing big, but i hope it makes a small difference smile

Oh, that's another thing that I realized after talking with Dave's family... Dave actually receives significantly more from Medicaid than the $50. However, from what I understand, both the money from Medicaid and Social Security are transferred directly to the care facility where Dave is staying. He gets to keep $50 for his personal care account. So, Dave is definitely getting significantly more than $50 in the way of medical care/assistance, but $50 is all that he sees for his personal care account....I just wanted people to know that.

Oh, and I really like emm's idea of post cards from around the world! Even if you don't send money, I KNOW Dave would like to have a postcard or two from wherever you are - it's an inexpensive thing, but I think it would put a smile on his face! smile

Thanks for clearing this up Paul. I was a little concerned when I read the original post because I know Medicaid will cover a lot of medical expenses and it's generally way more than $50 of coverage.

Also, I wanted to ask if he is on Medicare? With his condition he should qualify for Social Security Disability (full disability) and after 3 years of being on SSDisability he would be eligible for Medicare which will help to cover much more in medical treatment as well as paying for his care at a long term facility. Also, if his family contacts the drug companies (depending on the medication he is on) many drug companies will distribute free or reduced priced medications for those in need. There are many other things that Dave might qualify for. If you would pm me with anything that he might need, I could do some research and find out what would available for him. I'm a social worker, and finding resources available for those that need them is what we do best.

Since I just graduated with my MSW, and just recently was hired (haven't started working yet), I won't be able to help out financially until I start getting paid. Until that time, I wouldn't mind helping out in other ways (such as looking for other available resources for him that his family be unaware of that exists). Again, just pm me and let me know!

I just got this from Dave about 5 minutes ago:

I just wanted to thank you for posting my story on the website. Please post my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has sent me money and/or kind words. The response on the site at least has been great. Please also post my financial goal of a million dollars. Then I could get my own house, adapt it for me, get a hydraulic standing frame, a private nurse for each shift, a cna, a hoyer lift, and adjustable bed, a doctor, and have enough left over for stem cell surgery when it is available. Better yet, please copy this email on the website. Thanks again. Gotta go.
