MySpace aims to stop reposting of videos

Updated Fri. May. 11 2007 8:40 AM ET

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES -- MySpace, a networking website owned by media conglomerate News Corp., said Friday it launched copyright protection software for video content.

The feature, called Take Down Stay Down, prevents users from reposting videos that have been removed at the request of the copyright owner.

MySpace has several other copyright protection features already available, such as an audio filtering application which screens audio files to prevent people from uploading bootlegged music; a video filtering application, which screens video files to prevent illegal video uploads; and a Content Take Down tool, which allows copyright owners to request unauthorized content be taken down.

rolleyes

People are going to have to start to see these things differently. It's a new world. If you make something and put it out there, it's gone. You can no longer control it or profit from it aside from its promotional value. Money is to be made in delivering it in a way that people prefer and are willing to pay for. If that's not ok, don't make it. Them's the new rules.

If you do something that infringes on someone's copyright, it is stealing. Some artists don't care if you use their work, but the ones they're talking about do care. It doesn't hurt to ask for permission to use somebody's work.

Why would you charge someone to look at you, are you copyrighted?

Okay by me but there are some artists that don't see it that way yet. And they do own the rights to their own work still.

I don't think most artists care that much but there are some that do. If you put one up and it gets yanked, I guess they care.

It doesn't matter how they see it. This is the reality that they need to wake up to.

Yep, the law is on their side, but good luck enforcing it.

Most of them know it and are adapting their marketing but some really don't like it and it's those few that Myspace is trying to help. Myspace is caught in the middle, it was originally a site for musicians to network with each other and still is that for a lot of them but now people are feeling entitled to use anything they find. It really doesn't hurt to ask if you can use something. Usually the artists are flattered and don't mind at all.

youtube should stop people from posting the same videos, over and over again.

Yeah, it'll narrow the page count down, making it easier to find what you need.

SO. DAMN. TRUE.

and the more you try to "legislate" what you put out there, the more of a "commodity" it becomes in the whole culture of "illegal" sharing.

the more the industry tries to MANIPULATE this culture of online sharing instead of PUNISHING it, the better off it will be.

NIN did a great job of it with the "viral marketing" of year zero.

whether it was on purpose or not, a demo version of beck's "guero" album leaked before the final product, so some fans had TWO versions of the album by the time it came out.

there are ways to use "the way things are" advantageously, but i guess it's easier to strongarm, bully and restrict. rolleyes
