Unfortunately, gas is a "must have" life requirement, as is milk, water, food...not everyone can bike, train, bus, etc... to get along in every day life. Perhaps it should be expensive to persuade us to find other means, but right now, it's expensive for all the wrong reasons... corporate greed and gouging - just because they can!

Let's at least unite today and not buy gas!

disbelief

Not even close. People just THINK it is. I know people need to drive, but people DON'T need to drive big stupid SUVs and pickups (why the hell do you need a pickup that big unless you're a contractor?) If you REALLY wanted to, you could move closer to work and walk, bike, or take public transport. But suggesting stuff like this to most people is akin to suggesting that God doesn't exist to a Christian.

People will just go gas up tomorrow. Gas companies know this, and they also know how dependent people are on gas. You want to make a statement? Sell your SUV and buy a bike.

Somehow this is going to come back and bite us all in the ass. Like the gas companies raising prices even further with the excuse that they missed a day's full profit and have to make up for it...even though they won't really lose out because people who didn't buy today will buy tomorrow or the next day anyway because they still drove their car to work or wherever instead of really making a difference and chose an alternate way of getting around.

Never underestimate the gas companies' ability to bullshit their way to higher prices to keep those record profits coming in while the rest of the world suffers.

I've never owned an SUV, nor have I ever understood the reason behind them. The same goes for giant monster trucks that get behind you at night and blind you because their headlights are right in your rear-view mirror! Yes, I am with you 100% on this. People DON'T need these types of vehicles.

I also agree with the statement that the suggestion of walking, biking and taking public transport is important, but, sadly, unlikely. It's just not practical in today's hurry-up-and-wait world. I am also responsible for this type of behavior. I wish I didn't need my car so much... but, in my job it's very much a necessity. confused

In any case... one day isn't going to kill us, and in the big picture is for the greater good. nod

I think it's kinda like that "National Smoke-Out Day" that we have here, where people attempt not to smoke for a day in the hopes that they will see how easy it is to go smoke-free. I know some people who have actually given up smoking after making it through that day...

Obviously, giving up driving is a little more of a stretch... but, who knows? lol

Unfortunately, oil companies won't care either way.
If we don't buy gas today, they'll just jack up the price that much more tomorrow. If we buy more gas today, they'll jack up the price claiming supply and demand.
The consumer can't get a break and won't until the governments decide to give up their corporate kickbacks and grow a backbone.
But...that'll never happen...

My dad drives a pick up because he does a lot of outdoor work involving hauling heavy loads.....can't do that with a Corolla every week. lol That's what most people buy pick ups for. Of course there's the small percentage who only buy them for the macho factor. Think about people who aren't in major cities too. They don't have the fantastic public transportation systems that bigger cities have, and they're also not in walking distance to grocery stores, their occupation, shopping centers, etc. It's also not easy as pie for people to just pick their bags up and move to a metro city to cut down on driving. Lots a factors play a role in that other than income.

Your dad is an exception, at least if you're talking about city people. Most of the big pickups I see around here look clean as a broke dick dog and have business types driving them. No heavy duty hauling going on there.

As for people who don't live in cities, at least around here in Atlanta, there are bus services that go waaaayyyy up into the 'burbs, and I happen to know that a lot of major cities DO offer SOME kind of transportation to get in and out of them. I grew up in a small hick town so I know how inconvenient it can be when you live far from things. You just have to plan your drives a little more.

The bottom line is, for most people, it's just the inconvenience factor. Most people don't want to be bothered having to look for the bus schedules, locations, etc., and often, those are some of the same people who bitch the most about the price of gas. All I'm saying is, everyone talks about how they want to be independent of foreign oil and whatnot, but no one is willing to make a sacrifice or inconvenience themselves for that end.

and ya know what? if you get into the habit of using the bus, train, etc., it's not an inconvenience at all. plus you don't have to look for parking whenever you wanna go somewhere.

When I had a car I was ALWAYS worried about that shit, or getting it towed or something like that. My car even got stolen and when I got it back, I was like, "Y'know, I don't really even want to DEAL with this." And I bought a bike.

I'm the Community Relations Manager for Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Bakersfield, CA.

My job includes going to school sites, sometimes delivering books in mass quantities to better our relationship with the district buyers. On any given day, I might be taking 5 to 15 boxes of books to a school site... not very practical if I rode my 10 speed. confused

what gets me about all the socialist that get mad when oil companies make a profit is this... both the Fed and State and governments EACH make more per-gallon than do the oil companies.
