God it was good! I like his stuff. He's like a lighter Tom Robbins. Very funny. Actually that one was hard for me to get into for some reason, though. My Legacy

Okay, I started in on this weird-ass book today. So far it's kind of like a mixture of Flann O'Brien and Herman Hesse. This book is incredible. I have a non-representative (the book is very funny) quotation from it in my profile!

Oh man, I love that book. Do you have the version that falls apart? There's one that falls apart at the spine. I bought it for two friends and along with mine they both fell apart. . [Edited 5/15/07 9:16am] We used to travel in Mexico and camp on the beach where that movie was made. Unfortunately the area was developed, and not the same. The air strip was there and overgrown with weeds. At the time, 25 yrs ago, it was pristine.

Would like to re-read Abbey Hoffman's "Steal This Book" if I can find it. Even though I'm more conservative these days.....it was an era.

Slightly disappointed thus far. There have been a few good one liners, but from the comments on dust jacket I was expecting much better. I'm only on page 109 so hopefully it'll pick up soon. Improving a bit due to the following excerpt on p. 184--185 "...Samad was first amused and then depressed by the items his wife and son determined essential, life-or-death things: Millat Born to Run (album)--Springsteen Poster of DeNiro in "You talkin' to me" scene from Taxi Driver Betamax copy of Purple Rain (rock movie) Shrink-to-fit Levi's 501 (red tab) Pair of black Converse baseball shoes A Clockwork Orange (book)" The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Has anyone read Atlas Shrugged? I'm a bit curious to read that one although I don't think I'd agree with its views.

I read a book which talked about it a lot (Old School by Tobias Wolf), so for a moment there I thought I HAD read it. Angelina Jolie will star in the film version

I stopped reading that halfway through. Usually his books are much better. I guess if I started it again, I would have to go back to the beginning, I just found it really slow.. I will love you forever and you will never be forgotten - L.A.F.

Or of Atlas Shrugged? If it's Atlas Shrugged then it's kind of a weird coincidence that they would do it now all of a sudden after all these years, and that it would be at the same time that I happened to hear about the book from a friend.

Atlas Shrugged is a little long to squeeze into a movie. I'd like to see how they do it though. It was huge in scope, and it's very creative, but it beats you over the head with its philosophy. Also the characters don't seem very human. The Fountainhead doesn't go as deeply or clearly into the philosophy, but it's a much better book. Bad movie, though. I actually skipped nearly 100 pages of Atlas Shrugged because a character delivers a speech in the end that just repeated all the shit that the book had already said many different ways. Still, she was influential for me in high school, and not coincidentally, for a girl I liked. [Edited 5/19/07 12:01pm] My Legacy

See, that's why Sartre divided his work into fiction (like Nausea) and pure philosophy (like Being And Nothingness, which is by the way the most difficult but also interesting book I've read). Mixing it up too much just makes it messy, especially if you end it with the kind of speech you mentioned. It still sounds interesting though, and it's nice to hear that even to this day it comes across as creative. The Fountainhead doesn't go as deeply or clearly into the philosophy, but it's a much better book. Bad movie, though.
Never heard of that one. Thanks for the tip!

I really don't know the English title of this book. "Qualities." Wow. That should take you a while. The only Musil I've read is Young Torless. But one of these lifetimes I'd like to make it through The Man Without Qualities. Have you read Hermann Broch?
