Ok, not funny: my external hard-drive just died on me......

So I purchased an external harddrive (Maxtor,290 GB) a couple of months ago so I could store all my shit (mainly music & pics) on it. This way I could clean up my laptop and have it perform better (faster).
It just just died on me..... eek sad

What am I to do? Is my stuff lost? I am not good at stuff like this, even if my hard-drive is done, is there a way to retrieve the data that's on it? Because if there's not, my ass is grass!

Please advice! neutral

I'm not sure what 'died' means. It could be just the box itself, while the hard drive is safe and good inside. Hard drives usually have 5 years warrenty, that means they are supposed to be very reliable, so if I had to bet, I'd bet on the box.

I think it is too, therefore I wanna know if there is a way to retrieve the data even if the box is fucked.....

Yes, you could take the hard drive out of the box and connect it as an internal hard drive to your PC.
Of course, make sure that the PC is not only shut off, but out of the electric socket when you connect the hard drive internally to it.

But if it's a laptop, then just getting the box fixed, or replaced.
If it's the box, then your data is safe in the hard drive until you get the box fixed.

If the hard drive is truly gone, then there's nothing you can do except shell out the money to have an agency recover your data, which isn't cheap by any means. If it's the cable, no problem, get a replacement. But taking the hard drive out of the box won't solve anything.

Thank you all (except 9s, brick), I don't think the drive is fucked, I think it's a cable problem as it's not feeding the thing anymore.....I will have to figure out if there's someone who can fix it for me, as I don't have clue about that stuff myself!

The same happened me a few months ago - luckily it was just the enclosure that died and the hard drive was OK. I installed it into an old PC and the data was fine. Get someone to install it on their PC and if the drive works, then just dump it back onto a new external HD.

And if they're really nice, you could buy a new enclosure for about 30 euro and get them to fit the drive from the old one into the new enclosure. So you have a second one for a backup in case you actually have a hard drive failure in the future.

Similar thing happened to me except it was my car that died on me.

Have you tried replacing the carburetor? Worked for me.

worst case scenario you just pay a data recovery business to get it all off the drive.

nod I just think it's ironic in an un-fuckin'-funny way: you install an external HD to prevent your files from getting lost by an eventual crash of your computer, then the damned dies on you! pissed

If I'm struggling to fit luggage/shopping/etc in my car I just tow a smaller car behind me and put it all in there.

Whenever my hard drive isn't enough for my girlfriend's box & she has to connect an external one to her PC,
I can't help but feel a bit emasculated. sad

Or a caravan, then I could put my chilled goods in the little fridge and I wouldn't have to rush home.
