LOST - Best episode of the year by far! (Spoilers Will Follow)

The Jacob scene was masterful. And Ben's background was very interesting. Your thoughts...

Okay, TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED!

Lucy started crying just as they got to Jacob's lair.

What are the two words that "Jacob" supposedly said? Did we even hear them?

I am getting conflicting reports.

Well, the Jacob scene was eerie in a Twin Peaks kinda way. As Locke was leaving with his back turned to Ben and Jacob, he heard someone say 'Help Me". It was definitely a different pitch. During the ensuing chaos, a brief face appeared (we Tivo'd and watched it again) sitting in the chair. Very cool!

Yeah, I gotta admit, that this was probably the best episode this season (I keep saying that but they keep getting better and better). Great beginning and spectaculr end ...BTW

Things I noticed

Mikhail is apparently not one of them, but is I still say he was spared during the purge. But wouldn't anone manning the hatches be spared? It seems as though the only station that might have been known if you were just a Dharma Workman, would perhaps be the Pearl Station. I'm betting that the inhabitant of the island didn't know about the hatches. And when the purge happened those folks were left alive. Of course after a while when no replacements came there would be a WTF factor. I think Mikhail was part of Dharma and spared.

Ben seemed very very upset that Jacob talked to Locke. I am willing to bet that he thinks that Locke is going to take his place as leader and he can't have that. Ben's MO - Fixing the infertile, so he can create a family on the island and continue the community (where's Annie?). Richard said to Locke that he was specail and that Ben didn't want Locke or the others to believe so. There is hinting that Richard is not happy with the way Ben has led them. Locke and Richard are on the same page, but neither of them knows it yet. Locke has a lot of contempt for how Ben has used the island and contaminated it with technology. Again we got an answer and a whole bunch more came with it. I think similar to seeing Smokey as just a lil wisp at the end of season one we've seen the wisp of Jacob. Funny how the two sorta parellel.

Jacob = Island?

Are the original people there immortal or age very very slowly. Obviously Richard (very un-Batmanwell) is one of the original inhabitants. Why would he give power over to Ben. WHat is their MO, if anything? DOes it have to do with the "archeology dig" happening on island #2.

It seems as though there is going to be another purge. Who will purge who?

Ben and Locke's Mother have the same name..EMily. Both have Daddy issues (who doesn't). Lock lost a kidney. Ben almost did. As Rava said in Seinfeld to Elaine. There is no such thing as a big conincidence or a small coincidence, there are simply coincidences!

I loved the Ben as a kid flashback. I was hoping there would be a bit more Dharma reveals like seeing how Dharma got to the island or maybe Jeronomo Jackson easter egg or something.

A few ???. Why would young ben be running for his mom? He even bellows it out as if he has said it before. I found this to be a little off. He never knew his mother. Unless he has attached to her picture. Also why did they leave their little village? Why not just kick Sayid, Jack and Kate out?

Is this the first we are hearing of the "hostiles"?

If so, this introduces a whole new mystery even as it apparently solves one: how did the "hostiles" get there? Who are they? And were they supposed to have been portrayed as immortal or were we to believe that guy (I forget his name, the guy who convinced Locke to get Sawyer to kill his father) was a different age?

Hep [sic] me.

The things I found most intriguing was the powder around Jacob's house, Ben saying "That's enough, you've had your fun!" (why fun?), and Ben's reaction to Locke saying that Jacob said "Help me". Almost seemed like he was totally put off guard by those words.

I think what was established was a time line of sorts.

Island has original habitants (not sure what to call these people)
Dharma Discovers the island...perhaps with people on it (the inhabitants)
Dharma sets up shop for whatever reason they are there. It sounds like a new society/Experimental place.

They get to the Island and ????? we bon't know what happened. But they did set up hatches/stations (not sure how they did this with the inhabitants there). And they set up a lil suburb with a fence to keep the inhabitants out. My question here is how did they find out that the hatches needed to be manned and really for what purpose. What and where and how was this "incident" Dr Candle mentions in the Swan Orientation film?

They bring people there and the place is thriving with the occasional Inhabitant (called Hostiles) breaking through.

Ben discoves the "Hostiles" and realizes they aren't exactly "hostile". He hates his life and his dad. He also sees that "freedom" might mena life w/out Hippie Dharma people. He waits for his chance.

Inhabitants "purge" the Dharma folk. But not all of them is my guess. Patchy is a left over and so is Kalvin Inman (Desmonds hatch buddy)...who also referred to "The Hostiles" Which is what Dharma called them.

My belief is Ben + Inhabitants + Ben recruits = Others.

I don't know... to me it seemed, like a reaction to the words "help me".

This proves that they've got the story all sorted because it explains why Kalvin went outside in a gas mask after what we know about the Purge.

Hmm, org hickup...

Meant to say that the writers also said that we will some day see that they knew all along what the corpses in the caves from season 1 were all about. Interestingly though, they originally planned to kill Jack in the pilot but were talked out of it by abc. So not every "detail" is planned in advance obviously.

Yes, apparently we'll get that answer at the end. They have said for the most part that for everything the show us there is a "reason" for it and they know what that reason is. They aren't just showing us random things that just look creepy.

In production, I am sure there are specific props they ask for that will be used for filming and then there are those things that are in the background as decoration. THOSE things are usually the creative folks that do the set design, who are able to throw their own "art" into the mix that helps with the overall mythology.

In terms of plot development, they know the beginning and ending (they know how this ends) and there are "tent poles" put up for major story arcs. So they know certain "end point" and they write towards those. So everything is not dictated down to the letter. Other things that will change things up is how the actors react to each other and play off of each other will determine the diologue and perhaps some plot points between the characters. FOr instance Ben was supposed to be a 3 episode character, but he was SO good, they decided to keep him and rework a bit of the story around his character.

Then there are other issues at play, like actor availability. If the actors don't have contracts, it can be very difficult for the writers to write for characters who are not available...like L. Scott Caldwell who plays Rose and is on Broadway all the time. Or Harrold Perrineau (Michael) who joined the cast of 28 weeks later and simply has not been available. What is he supposed to do, he's not on payroll, should he wait until they need him for one episode?

That's interesting about Ben, considering how much attention he gets now. BTW, about that Jacob pic (don't know if this is too spoilerish to some, so highlight if you want to read, it's just speculation though) -

Here it is, better to write in white on actual white background...

I'm almost convinced that's Magnus Hanso, granddaddy of the Hanso (forgot the first name) that funded the Dharma Initiative. They look sooo much alike and since Jacob seems to wear really old clothes and his ship, The Black Rock, is stranded on the island, it seems like it's not too unlikely.

Could be...Not sure if "looking alike" is the key. It could be ALvar himself. But I think that it could simply be the island personified. There is definitely something we are missing. SOmeone even suggested that Ben's "imprint" is on the island. Not so sure about that either

okay so i saw the episode and i saw the face the first go round without pausing or anything else... and the first thing that came to mind was carnivale (an amazing show that only lasted two season on hbo: http://www.hbo.com/carnivale/). when i saw jacob the frist person i thought it was Patrick Bauchau, who played lodz the blind psychic. with that enhancement i am more convinced that it is actually him. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000872/
