ACTRESS MAIA CAMPBELL - BI-POLAR FALLEN ON HARD TIMES & DRUGS

http://blackvoices.aol.co...n-action/2

This poor sista has fallen way on hard times and it's so sad to see. Mental health has always been a taboo issue in the black community and she's bi-polar and apparently on drugs, topped off that her mother, Author BeBe Moore Campbell, just passed late last year, this child is so far out there that she may not be reeled back in.

The author of this piece should be shamed of himself making light of her condition. What a hack.

Yeah but it's a very touchy subject in the black community, mainly because the black church preaches that all you have to do is pray and you will get through anything, be it emotional, psychological, or physical, so people tend to neglect the scientific side of dealing with these issues and just "Put it in God's hands" and most times it's not that simple.

religious nuts drive me crazy, as if prayer is the answer to all that is wrong in the world.

yes this is very true. and it's quite sickening. yes i go to church, but when i got depressed over my father's passing and when i was going through a really tough break up, i had to go to a therapist, and i can actually say that i really don't know where i would be right now if i hadn't taken that step. Sadly, going to therapists are looked down upon in the black "religious" community. It's like asking the "devil" for help in their eyes.
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Yeah, it's sad that it's looked upon that way and I'm glad you were able to get to talk someone that helped you through that.

That's too bad. I remember watching her on In The House. I thought she was the most beautiful girl I'd ever seen. I hope she gets the help she needs.

In this world, you have to do what you have to do in order to help yourself. I am a type I diabetic. I have also been raised in the church. I used to be a church going Christian, but now I am more wary towards organized religion. I still believe in spirituality though. For years, I always had people telling me that I just need to depend "totally on the Lord" and not go to the doctor. There is no doubt in my mind that I would be dead. My mother realized that too. There is a place for spirituality and a place for conventional medicine when it comes to illness. I'm glad you got the help you needed and didn't follow what everyone else said.

This is sad news to hear and unfortunately health issues are a touchy subject in all races which is something I've never quite understood. There is nothing at all wrong with therapy or getting help for depression or whatever issues one has. Having been born and raised here in the South I believe it to be more openly discussed and accepted here than in other parts of the country. I think Dixie Carter's character on Designing Women explained it best once on her show when it was on, she said, "I'm saying this is the South. And we're proud of our crazy people. We don't hide them up in the attic. We bring 'em right down to the living room and show 'em off. See, no one in the South ever asks if you have crazy people in your family. They just ask what side they're on." It’s a quote that rings true.

I hope someone reaches out to her and gets her some help. pray or pray

Not the answer but it is a start though....
In spite of the cost of living, it's still popular.

There was a video on www.mediatakeout.com a few months ago where she seemed totally out of it. She reminded me of some of the crack fiends around my neighborhood - the ones who were sooooo pretty growing up and now the drugs have taken away their looks/promise.

What's even sadder is that there were guys around who were obviously in an x-rated frame of mind, if u get where I'm comin' from. There's rumored to be a sex tape floating around with her as the star.

I hope she can get herself together sad

It's very hard to be bipolar. a lot of them self medicate with drugs or alcohol.
I know first hand about the religious communities looking down on people who gwt councilling but being bipolar is a physical disorder as well as mental and needs to be treated as such,
