frickin tragedy all around.
such a senseless loss. katt here the public health nurse makes one visit after you've come home from the hospital. i would hope that if it didn't look like you knew what you were doing that they would flag you for another visit but i have no idea if that is the case or not.

Both Isomil and Similac make soy based formulas. Every grocery store and drug store carries them. No excuse for this stupidity. "Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind"-Dr Seuss

That’s soy formula, this is just soy milk (and Apple juce  ) Most babies are fed solely on breast milk for 6 months anyway and high protein foods should be avoided according to latest allergy advice. My NON VEGAN son had human milk, formula milk and mashed veggies until he was 13 months. Effectively vegan and perfectly normal. He now enjoys meat, but that is a different story. The stupidity of this couple is on trial not the fact that they were vegans, unless of course the vegan diet slowed there mental capability. (I know IB veggies are less likely to be lethargic and have a quicker wit! ) I have issues with giving too much Soya milk to kids becasue of the as yet unknown longterm effects of phtoestrogens. I am reserving judgement on this one. Happy is he who finds out the causes for things.Virgil (70-19 BC). Virgil was such a lying bastard!

is this any worst than the HIV + woman that belived that HIV did not cause AIDS and refused to have her child tested and it ended up dieing of AIDS?
and why can't a vegan breast feed? if that is a vegan rule that is stupid... would they be mad at a baby cow for drinking cow's milk?

evenstar3 said: slam! you have got to stop with this crazy 'let's compare two things cause it's fun' reasoning. well i will not. both cases were stupid parents that caused the death of their child. the only reason you are weird about it is the HIV/AIDS angle. when the truth is most new cases of HIV+ or AIDS in the US are due to behavior and are for the most part completely avoidable. just like this case. the baby did not have to die. she choose to let the baby die, she had to have notices. i noticed when my son lost a few ounces....

Genesia said: Young children should never, ever, ever be fed restrictive diets. (Unless, of course, they have some sort of life-threatening disease.) The dietary needs of a child (especially in the first few years of life) are immense -- and getting adequate and varied nutrition is critical to their mental and emotional (as well as physical) growth.
There are certain vitamins that can only be found in animal foods. Children also lack a lot of co-factors necessary to convert vitamin pre-cursors into the actual vitamins. (For example, beta-carotene to vitamin A. True vitamin A is only found in animal foods.) Ok this one stuck with me as I read the entire thread and had to come back and comment on it.....First of all, Veganism is NOT a restrictive diet. I am a vegetarian (I do consume diary; milk, cheese but no egg). And animal products is not the only source of Vitamin A; you can find it in sweet potatoes, carrots, kale, mangos, turnip greens, raw spinach, papaya, red bell peppers, apricot, cantaloupe, romaine lettuce, raw tomatoes, broccoli, green bell peppers and oranges. This couple, as well as the reporter, must have been uninformed parents and consumers. Veganism is a healthy life style. .....Ok, stepping off my soapbox..... "It's not my attitude.......it's just the way I am."

right, but most if not all of it is in the form beta-carotene. adults can convert them but young children have a much harder time doing so. that is why all mammals produce milk for their offspring. because mammals need animal milk to get the needed nutrients. Genesia did not say that vegetarian/Veganism was a restrictive diet. But it is clear that this little baby was on a restrictive diet. there is no way that a baby could live off of that little fat (not to mention such little protein) and giving Almond milk could lead to other bad reactions). and to make matters worst they gave the baby fruit juice something that most nutrition experts would never recommend for any baby under 6 months old. their little tummies are too small to waste with such nutritionally empty volume,

Preferably with some info about the extent of the alleged difficulty (ie. do they convert 90% of what a typical adult would? 20%?). Beta-carotene is very easy to come by, so the need to consume extra as a vegan child wouldn't be a huge deal unless the conversion is truly very, very low. Which I suspect it isn't, or I wouldn't have heard of this problem, but. . . I'm willing to be wrong. Just give me a source. oh noes, prince is gonna soo me!!1!
