Ice keeps the swelling down. Keep the leg elevated as much as possible. Take the pain meds, it will dull the discomfort, (may cause constipation so drink plenty of fluids and eat alot of fruit, don't drink nor drive while taking a narcotic, nor sign any legal documents, or do anything requiring coordination)
If you develope symptoms of an infection such as fever or chills, call your doctor. Call also if you have persistant nausea, vomiting, inability to urinate(caused by the anesthetic) bleeding that saturates your dressing, pain not relieved by the pain medicine, numbnes, tingling, discoloration of the distal part of the extremity.
Do NOT get the dressing wet until ok'd to remove it and shower. NO tub baths, jacuzzis, etc. submerging in water may cause bacterial infection. Shower later is OK as soapy water runs down and is considered clean.
Any questions, org note me before, during, or after.
After surgery, start with clear liquids and advance to soup, then a soft diet (noodles, rice, mushy stuff) then a regular diet.

Thats gotta be painful. My sister has had that and been operated on twice following a rugby injury and my lil brother has had that too, (rugby again) and awaiting his second operation, this summer I think.

Oh hunny I am sure you will be fine...My dad and me also have bad knee problems. Mine are from various sports injuries when I was younger, his is a war wound when he was in Vietnam and over time the cartilage in both his knees have deteriorated to the point that he has none as well as his hip and has to have cortizone shots in both of his knees and hip. So I deffinately know how you feel and I know what I have to look foward to when I turn 61 which is the age he just turned this past Feb. He also had surgery this past Dec. for a slipped disk at the top of his neck, the doctors basically fused it in place with titanium and he now has not back or neck problems unlike me which he also passed on to me...Thanks dad for all of this

Oh my good GOD, it was, and is so painful.. Having to relearn to straighten my knee, and to bend the knee...

However, everyday is progress.
