Has this ever happened before? I know there was a fire up there a month or two ago, but I thought this crazy stuff was always outside of L.A. confuse

I don't think it's happened exactly there before that I can remember, but fires happen all over California, especially when morons don't put out their cigarettes properly (according to the the theory I heard about this particular one).

I grew up in Malibu where evacuation was a yearly event it seemed. We had the hills across the street burn, and neighbors losing houses.

It's the dry air, lack of rain, & Santa Ana winds. If you drive around LA you can see lots of places where the trees are still black from fires that might have happened years ago.

Oh, and just wait for the first rains in fall. Then come the landslides!

That picture of Griffith park is so scary, though!

You aren't supposed to even smoke in the hills, so he was committing a crime before a ciggie ever hit the ground, if that was the case.

Seriously, and I'm not blaming Philip Morris, but WTF do people think when they've got cigarettes in the middle of a mountain of dry brush?

At least be careful when you break the law!

Maybe your avatar is fanning the flames! omfg

lol

The fire was the fifth in the 4,200-acre park since December and one of a string of blazes to hit the Hollywood Hills. In March, a fire crept up the hills on the San Fernando Valley side and burned near the Hollywood sign. Earlier this year, brush fires destroyed homes in Malibu and Beverly Hills.

Downtown Los Angeles is close to setting a record for lack of rainfall. County officials issued a report earlier this week that found the moisture level of hillside brush was 50% lower this May than a year earlier. The brush is expected to dry considerably more during the summer and early fall.

There were very little injuries - all the firemen faired well, thank God. But hundreds of acres burned sad and the woodland creatures will be coming down to the neighborhoods to seek food... racoons, possums, and coyotes... oh, my! eek
