Photos taken at night!

How do you get the kind of contrast that the naked eye sees? I'm trying to take a photo of the skyline and, even though I can see it, the CN Tower is disappearing into the black sky in the pics. wall

Hey - totally off topic, I wanna clear out some equipment. What do you think I should ask for the following (I ask, 'cause you are the cat here when it comes to musicians):

'78 Tele
'59 Les Paul Jr.
Squier Tele
Takamine
Roland JC-120
Yamaha DX-21
Tascam PortaOne

It's all about timing. You need to take the picture when the dark sky matches the brightly lit buildings. About half an hour after sunset is a good start.

They're all great. But surely I've seen skyline pics taken against a black sky where you can see the outlines of the buildings?

You need a tripod if you want high quality (ISO 100). If you don't have one you have to increase the ISO to avoid camera shake. This one I took handheld with a small pocket cam (Fuji F30):

Try playing with the levels in photoshop to see if you can pull out enough detail.

Otherwise, try shooting in RAW format (if your camera supports it), since it will give you more flexibility in adjusting the image.

There's also another technique of using multiple exposures of the same image, and combining them into one, but you need to be careful not to move the camera at all.

one other trick in photoshop...

take your image and copy it, then paste it as a mask. Invert the mask and choose "load selection". This will "select" all the dark areas of your image. You can then adjust the levels, and only pull out extra detail in the shadow areas of the picture, without making it too light overall.

I know what you mean... it was in Lisbon. The first battery was fine the whole day but the 2nd one (fully charged) died after 15 pics. Thankfully I was in a big city and could buy a new one the next day.
