Black henna should be avoided. A chemical dye known as PPD, which is not authorized for use on the skin by the FDA is often added to the natural henna to produce a black color. Black henna has become very popular in certain tourist areas, particularly Venice Beach and Mexico. It can cause liver and kidney damage, as well as scarring of the skin.
Natural henna, when applied to the skin rarely causes any adverse reactions, if you are concerned you should do a small patch test first. Natural henna is safe even for use on children as it contains no dangerous chemical dyes or harsh additives. The paste is made from ground leaves of henna plants and a variety of ingredients such as lemons, limes, black tea, coffee, rose petals, orange blossoms, essential oils, cloves, pomegranates, tamarind, okra, and sugar. http://www.hennacaravan.com/facts.html Oh gosh! thanks for that info. The lady I saw in the store was using black and I've always wanted to get it done just like that. "Nobody makes me bleed my own blood...NOBODY!"

That looks pretty on her.
I love henna art but me personally if I am gonna tattoo myself I am making it permanent. I got my third one in two weeks not to long ago. I still need to take a pic of it. But I took something very personal which was my name wrote in arabic calligraphy that one of my friends from U.A.E did for me in college and put it on the back of my left shoulder. So I have my name, my sisters name, matts name and Simba from the lion king (dorky I know, it was my first one and my sister picked it out for me) tattooed on me. They are all special to me because the represent someone special to me permanently in my life.

you're right, simba is dorky. but it is redeemed by the fact that your sister picked it out.

I think she did a good job, she was 14 at the time, but hey she could of picked worse.... [Edited 5/9/07 15:04pm]
