because a lot of the time the first one is so good the sequels can not live up to the high expectations of the first one.

I like your question, but the examples are off. Aliens and Superman II(you have count the original version, not donner's new cut) are second best in their respective franchises. I've heard many people say Godfather Part II is the best, but I don't agree. I think the first film tends to be the most pure.

The only real trilogy in the list is Star Wars, and really ESB and ROTJ were probably no more than a basic idea in Lucas' mind at the time. The other movies are just separate stories under the trademark.

In literature the 2nd trilogy is usually the best cause it takes the characters, that are introduced in the first, and puts them in the worse possible situations before resolving everything in the 3rd.

Left off the Matrix!

It followed the typical trilogy arc, but the last one was probably the worst (very unsatisfying resolution to the series), while the first one was obviously the best.
"What kind of fuck ending is that?"

eek how did i forget the Matrix. To me the first one was the best, and the only one I can stomach to watch straight through. The last two sequels sucked. But the second one was better than the third if i had a choice. Everytime I attempt to watch the third installment, it puts me to sleep.

nod

everyone was dying for the second and third part but looking back
it would have been better if they'd left it at one.

the third one has some very cool scenes but overall it was
a huge disappointment.
