Calhoun, are you considering moving? Just wondering, since I knew you were having problems with that noisy upstairs neighbor.

How many bedrooms MUST you have? I currently only have one, but I would looooove to have two. I could only afford a one bedroom when I moved here, but if I were to ever move again, I DEFINITELY would get two.

Do you prefer a certain floor of the building? I prefer to be on the top floor, so that I don't have noisy neighbors on top of me. But I still have a noisy neighbor living below me, so I guess that point is kinda moot. lol

Does the # of closets/closet size matter? Yes, the closets must be a good size so that I can fit all my clothes, shoes, other stuff in there. Walk-in closets would be absolutely ideal for me! cloud9

Any bathroom rules? (i.e. tub AND shower, with sink or separate sink area) I live alone, but I do like having a tub and a shower. Having a separate sink area would be nice too, especially if you had to share a bathroom with someone.

Neighbors/neighborhood - pro's & cons? Well, you all know what my downstairs neighbor is like. lol But I prefer quiet neighbors, and to live in an area that's not overly busy with traffic.

Balconies - a must? Yes!! I don't have a balcony or porch now where I live and it sucks! mad It would be nice to have a balcony to sit out on, especially with the gorgeous weather we've been having here lately.

What about parking? I don't have an attached garage, and wished that I did. I have to walk a short distance from my building to the carport, which can be difficult in rainy, snowy weather.

I would also love to have an in-suite laundry room. It would be soo much easier to get in to wash my clothes. No waiting while someone else ties the machines up for hours. confused

Another thing I would love to have is my own private entryway to and from my apartment. There are two teenaged boys across the hall from me who run through the halls with their little friends after school. They sound like a herd of damn elephants. rolleyes I talked to their mother about it, and she was like, "Not MY boys!" Then she asked me if it was her boys that were running through the hall. I told her, "I don't know, but somebody is, and it needs to be stopped." disbelief

There are many days that I would LOVE to have a house. Sure, it's more work, money, and worries, but I would get away from this apartment-living shit that drives me nuts.

I just did the Grocery Bag Retard Walk a few minutes ago. I was carrying overloaded paper bags, and the handles start to pop one by one. . .

What's REALLY great is carrying paper bags several blocks through the rain and having them start to disintegrate because I'm too stupid to remember my canvas or ask for plastic. . . doing fuckin' paper mache as I'm walking down the damn street, trying to keep my groceries in one soggy ball long enough to get them upstairs. . . rolleyes

spit Grocery Bag Retard Walk, yes. I am too familiar. Ugh, nothing tops the canvas bags, especially in the rain! Plastic bags rip if you put more than one can inside, and the paper handles can't "HANDLE" shit! pissed

See why I live off take-out? lol

PRAISE THE LORD I have my own parking space!!! pray I don't know how that happened where I live, but it did. pray

My dream apartment would have room for a couch and a piano and washer and dryer. I hope to upgrade to a small house with a private yard someday.

How many bedrooms MUST you have? One, unless it's a studio with a good layout like what I had in Chicago. (L shaped, with the bed area being 2 ft higher than the rest of the apt.)

Do you prefer a certain floor of the building? Anything but the first floor/street level, cause I'm female. And if it's a walk up, then 2nd--4th floors only.

Any bathroom rules? (i.e. tub AND shower, with sink or separate sink area) Clean; with good water pressure and hot water quickly; not located in the kitchen. lol

Neighbors/neighborhood - pro's & cons? Must have a laundromat, grocery and public transportion within 3 blocks. Neighbors are hopefully not crazy.

Balconies - a must? A luxury I'll probably never have.

What about parking? n/a I don't drive.

Must have windows that actually get sunlight, hardwood floors, and full size kitchen appliances (no dorm-size fridges; which yes, really exist in NY apartments!).

Unfortunately for me, price is the main dictator of what my apartment will be like. I would love to live in a cute apartment in a fun neighborhood, but my paycheck won't allow that, so I'd rather have a nice, clean apartment in a boring neighborhood than a tiny crappy apartment in a hip 'hood.

My preferences have changed over the years. I used to love my crypt-like apartment with dark-coloured walls and a corridor-like floorplan, but now I'm looking for:

* A bright apartment with big windows and preferably a high ceiling.
* Not the ground floor because it's important to me that no-one can see in.
* No building right across the street, again because I'd like privacy.
* A few trees or bushes outside the window or at least nearby.
* Non-noisy neighbours and a quiet street.
* A roomy bathroom would be nice. The kitchen is not as important.

Of course a balcony and a fireplace etc would be very nice too, but that's luxury that's not completely necessary.

What I would give for some high ceilings up in this mutha! lol They're wonderful, aren't they? mushy

I try to think twice about streets that have buses going down them - I had a place like that once & granted it was a SUPER busy street that I had no business trying to live on, but the buses did wake me in the am confused

shocked Good grief. worship That's a workout, especially when it's been a long day.

Yeah, it's the pits dragging flimsy groceries up stairs. Lock the car, put keys in pocket, grab two trips' worth of overstuffed bags, which are slowly ripping, taunting you more and more with each painful step. God forbid I just make a couple more trips instead of being forced to stop halfway there and reinforce my grip on the once-fluffy loaf of bread, flailing and walking with my back bent sideways as not to drop the dishsoap.

And why is it always the embarrassing purchases that I'm kicking to the doorstep?! lol It never fails: tampons and condoms become soccer balls halfway through the trip because if I lean to grab them, everything else drops.

My next apartment will absolutely have (things I don't have now I have learned I NEED!):

at least 1 bedroom
hardwood floors
a bathtub (and a shower of course, combo OK)
laundry on site (if not in my own unit - I have this now, but it's a necessity)

I would also like (which I have now):
easy parking (on street is ok, as long as there's plenty of it)
no more than 4 units in the building (I prefer 4-plexs or smaller, no more big boxy buildings for me)
private entrance
decent sized kitchen

Just about everything else is negotiable.

Any bathroom rules? (i.e. tub AND shower, with sink or separate sink area)
I think I am happy with a shower.

Neighbors/neighborhood - pro's & cons?
Maybe apartments that are strict on noise, visitors, high security.

Balconies - a must? I don't really care for those.

What about parking? I think assigned parking is great!

why? Some phobia? I'm on the 5th...

Yeah, it sucks. Seriously. Things that most people would shudder at pass as "well, it's not that bad" here. I mean, last time I moved I was looking at studios in Hells Kitchen that were about 250 square feet with 2 burner stoves and mini-fridges. I was like, eek "You have got to be kidding me. I am too damn old to be paying $1,200/month for a shit hole apartment the size of a frickin dorm room!" It's completely outrageous...luckily I found a better apartment but now I have to go through the whole thing again b/c my stupid building is being torn down. cry

I mean, the trade off is of course, living in New York...but if you're too broke from paying rent to enjoy NYC, then NYC isn't really that fun; know what I mean?

If it's newly remodeled BE CAREFUL - I wanted hardwoods for the longest, finally got them along w/ a rule in my lease that 75% of each room had to be covered w/ rugs sigh I spent so much money on rugs (on top of the expense of moving, etc), they didn't even tell me that until I signed the lease disbelief
