A Three Part Challenge...

Part 1:

Name 10 things you like and 10 things you dislike about yourself. If you can't think of 10 things, do a 5/5 list.

Part 2:

Which list was the easiest for you to complete? And why?

Part 3:

Of the things you listed in the "dislike" list, what is in your power to change, and what is not? Of the things in your power to change, what can you do to change them? Of the things that are not in your power to change, what can you do to change how you perceive those aspects of yourself?

LOL :-p Actually I'm curious about this because many people seem to be able to list negative things about themselves much easier than they can the positive things. They seem to see themselves in a less than favorable light, while others see them in a more positive light. Advertising seems to add to this and it would be interesting to see if people can actually change the way they view themselves, (if they are even willing to try.)

Actually Dora, I'm a Social Worker by trade. I've had numerous classes in Psych, so yes it's right up my alley. Would you like to be the first to lay on my couch? wink

Dislike: Way too many things! smile

Like: Not enough.

I am working on it right now! I would list them but that would make me too vulnerable. Besides, I think you know my answers anyway! lol smile

A good topic for the brave!

Azure, you are a sweetheart and I didn't create this topic to make you or anyone vulnerable. Besides we've talked enough that you know me and I know you. lol

Belle, there is no need for you to post them here love. If you do the exercise, just be honest with yourself.

cntrvrsy, the same applies to you.

I created this topic because I believe it's good for each of us to take an honest look at ourselves and at what we can and cannot change. I also think it's important for us to be able to accept those things about ourselves that we can't change. Yeah I guess it is along the lines of "Lord grant me the strength to accept those things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." It's kind of cliche yes, but there is a lot of wisdom in it. In this day and age we are bombarded with advertisements on how to improve our lives with this product or that, implying that our lives are somehow less without the product, and those same advertisements lead us to believe less in ourselves and our own abilities to make our life be what we wish it to be.

Nothing more and nothing less intended with this thread.

Dora, very impressive! I can see that you know your way around the couch. lol Isn't it amazing to you the ability the mind has to create within itself certain realities, whether true or not, about the self? Simple exercises like the one above, may be psych 101, but they have an ability to cause one to look at themself in a more honest way and to also put into perspective the ability that one has to change or do something about a situation. For instance, someone who does not have your background, or mine, may believe that there is some flaw within themselves and believe that there is nothing they can do to change it, when it fact, it is the opposite. Or they may believe that they can change it, when it is something more inherit within them that cannot be changed and yet they fight against it, creating within themselves a turmoil that has no need to exist.

I know I have no need to explain to you the usefulness of the above exercise. I posted it because I felt that there might be some who would enjoy doing something of this nature. It was not intended to hurt anyone or to make anyone feel bad about themselves. Yes it is an exercise that as Azure said is for the brave. I wasn't really expecting anyone to post their answers here, but if it gets them to thinking, then I'm all for it.

Much love to all.

I have done this once in therapy, and you are correct in what you say...

It was much easier for me to list my faults, now hell I just think I am all that.

But Azure's signature speaks loads!

Things I like:
I like the way I relate to people.
I like the way I see people (upside).
I like the way I look.
I am very patient.
I am very even-tempered.
I am a spiritual person.
I am very feminine.

Things I don't like:
I can not get angry about things I should be angry about.
I let my husband get away with too much.
I spend too much money.
I let go too easily (of anything that becomes difficult).
I don't love as deeply as I would like.
I'm over 35.
I have a fear of flying.

It was easier to complete the first list because I am at
peace with myself.
Since there are reasons for the way I have become, I don't
think I would tamper with any of it except the fear of
flying.
