IRAQ REJECTS U.S. DEMAND ON INSPECTIONS...

What is the point of rejecting...?

What is there to hide...?

Why would they allow their country to be in a vulnerable position for an attack because they won't allow inspections...?

Why don't they want their people to feel protected...?

or better yet, why won't they protect their people...?

What is there to gain to reject inspections...?

Why can't there be a peaceful solution...?

anyone?

pray for PEACE!

The Iraqi's want trade embargos enacted at the end of the Gulf War lifted if they clear any UN inspections, as the 11 yr old embargos have kept the Iraqi people very poor.

Few countries like Russia(who just recently negotiated a $60 billion oil trade with Iraq) have the political clout to circumvent these embargos. Most do not, so Iraq stays poor.

Another view on rejecting the inspections could be that Iraq wants the Arab world to see the US for what it is, and if the US attacks without provocation-without an attack on the Untited States or one of its allies, the US stands the chance of alienating its current allies like Saudi Arabia.

___-

Well MrChristian,

I for one, hope that there can be a peaceful solution
to this - what seems an impossible situation.

A new proposal has supposedly been drafted by the U.N.
so that monitoring can take place in a less intrusive manner,
to make sure Iraq is not rebuildling its weapons.

One would hope that they could find some kind of
solution to make sure that if the sanctions were
broken, that the equipment that is so needed for the people
of Iraq to survive, is used solely for that purpose, and not for military purposes.
There is a lack of clean water, food, and medicine, and equipment is needed to fully
repair the problems.

So why can't there be a solution, why can't this be
surpervised in a non-threatening manner, for the people?

I agree that should be some kind of solution, but the equipment you speak of is not some magic amount of money you can throw at Iraq and remedy the situation. Instead of investing billions in aid, which no one will do, it would be cheaper to let their economy recover and let them take care of themselves.

The Iraqi's feel that if they are to be inspected, that the trade embargos written over a decade ago should be lifted.
Thus, they can begin trading with various countries, hoping they can revive their economy.

As for your last question...my sentiments exactly. Unfortunately there is more at stake here: oil, elections, and the US economy. You do the math.

As Mr Christian has already pointed out correctly, Saddam agreed to let the inspectors in if the sanctions will be changed to the advantage of iraq. I agree, because after all its the poor who are suffering, not saddam.
however, the US will attack anyway, with or without inspections. so thats not the point to discuss if you want peace. Cheney has made that very clear, and Bush as well.

we have 2 work just as hard at a peaceful solution as we do 4 war strategy. there is no way u can convince me all the minds we have on this task cant think of a non violent solution. god gave us the land 2 perserve not destroy he is watching. but its our call we are not puppets he gives us freedom 2 make the right or wrong moves.we can ask 4 his help but ultimately its up 2 us.how can any war b won when someone must die.

What choice does he have? Cowboy W. will go in anyway. This way Saddam forces his hand, forces Bush to act unilaterally and galvanizes world opinion against the US. That's right: Saddam is smarter than W.

Maybe nothing.

Why would they allow their country to be in a vulnerable position for an attack because they won't allow inspections...?

Again, they recognize that inspections are a pretense. This administration is not listening to its own criticism, let alone Europe's and the World's. Why would what Iraq decides one way or the other matter?

Why don't they want their people to feel protected...?

Saddam will only feel "protected" when all Americans and jews are dead, so this question is meaningless in regard to the ongoing debate.

or better yet, why won't they protect their people...?

Why wouldn't Saddam even feed his own people? The reason there are sanctions is that Saddam was redirecting all funds (oil money etc.) away from society and to the military and industrial complex of the Iraqi (read: Saddam's) state.

I admit I don't know all of the intricaies of the U.N. sanctions, how they are written and enforced (except that obviously the U.S. is especially behind them), but the feeling is that if they were lifted the money would not go to where it is intended.

What is there to gain to reject inspections...?

Again, moral high-ground; if not immediately, then soon. It's his only choice.

Why can't there be a peaceful solution...?

We live in dumb times.

man, if i was rich and a education from college and was born in Iraq...sigh! all those dreams... wasted.

i still can't believe w. got in with his poor presentation skills. blah! saddam rules, imho! :p smile

The White House Said:

Why did the Administration wait until September to make its case against Iraq? White House chief of staff Andrew Card told The New York Times last week, ``From a marketing point of view, you don't introduce new products in August.''

If its a life or death matter, why is the White House looking at marketing issues?

soulpower,

With all due respect to your knowledge and opinions,
could you please tell me the source of the info
relating to "with or without inspections, US will ..."

I was always under the impression that with inspections,
strikes would NOT happen!

Thank you in advance...also, I would like to say
thank you all for the comments, let there be more...
I've gotta go.

I've seen him say it on CNN about two weeks ago... he was even laughing when he told the reporter... it was all over the news in europe after that.cheney said that even if he agrees with inspections, saddam still is a threat to the world and needs to be removed.

Bush set himself up for this one...and what was their responce after Iraqs announcement? "We dont believe him"...Well, duh!!

Now, Saddam has bought himself four more months of safety...ample time to clean his mess...And Bush and America looks like raving lunatics if we attack...

Echo says:

I was so hoping that an agreement would be meant.
One that can be trusted on both sides. The U.N. could
make sure that inspections are done thoroughly, yet
peacefully, and that they CONTINUE to inspect - forever -
so that there isn't any speculation of threats for not
only the PEOPLE OF IRAQ - BUT - the THE PEOPLE OF THE
WORLD. The people of Iraq are suffering, they should be
taken care of. The threat of war throughout the world
should be elimnated. To elimnate threat, we have to
trust each other, and comunicate, therefore, inspections
should continue. There should be nothing to hide.

pray for peace
